Amazing stay

Stayed for a couple of nights over the bank holiday weekend, we booked a while ago and paid £325 for a sea view double room including breakfast, we had a brilliant stay, when we opened the door to our room we were blown away by the view, we had a lovely view of Tolcarne beach and the sea, the room had recently been refurbished and was lovely, we have eaten in the Steam restaurant downstairs numerous times on previous visits to Newquay and did so again on both nights, the meals and breakfast were both delicious, thanks to all the staff for a lovely stay.

Great staff, shame about the hotel.

Both of these stars are for the staff. Were I rating the staff in isolation they would receive a 5. They were helpful, professional and polite. The hotel on the other hand was dreadful. For £196, booked 8 weeks ago we initially received room 101. Its well named but needless to say looks nothing like any of the photos on their site. The furniture is old tired and mismatched, the light and the telephone in the room were broken and the corridors and doors are chipped and run down. Despite the hotel being full (or we'd have checked out immediately) the lovely sympathetic receptionist found us a different room. It was better but still not what we would have expected for nearly £200. We understand that prices fluctuate according to season and Saturday in Newquay in August may be hitting the pricing heights. However the attempt to charge £196 for a room such as this would prevent me from ever staying in a St Austell hotel again. If these rooms need refurbishment (and are part of a programme?) so be it. But don't try and rip customers off by forcing the price up whilst misrepresenting your hotel on your website.

Great first time stay

We have just returned from a 2 night stay here at The Great Western.
Our room (105) was a good size with a comfy bed and plenty of storage. The room in our opinion was clean and well maintained. We had breakfast each morning and a dinner there on the Saturday and the food was of very good quality. Staff were very pleasant including Michelle on reception and the bar and waiting staff . We will definitely be back. Thanks' for making our stay most enjoyable.

Nice conveniently placed hotel ,The food and drink are good, have stayed here before and would again but slight downside it is slightly tired decor and could do with some tlc

Just returned from a short but sweet stay at the Great Western Newquay at the beginning of September. Having stayed previously, i generally knew what to expect, although this time it was apparent that the wear and tear of many busy summers had really caught up with the place and it is all in need of a serious refurbishment. The public areas such as the stairwells, corridors and reception areas in particular are like a throwback to decades past.
The location is great and has to to be the hotels biggest selling points. There are many rooms that will have sea views, as well as the bar and restaurant areas all having great views too. The hotel is just far enough away from some of the more "lively" parts of Newquay, that if you end up with a road side room at the front of the hotel, theres less chance you'll be disturbed than some other hotels a little further down. It's also close enough to plenty of other eating areas and a short walk to the town centre to not be considered ti be "out of the way" in any shape or form and ofcourse minutes from both Great Western and Tolcarn beaches. Furthermore there is a bus stop directly outside the front of the property with services towards Padstow, Newquay Airport, St Austell and Truro. Additionally, Newquay railway station is just a 2 minute walk over the road as well!
We stayed in a sea view room overlooking the Great Western beach. The views are of course delightful. The room itself was very clean and although very dated well kept.
