Great hotel in the heart of Rhodes town.

My wife and I have recently returned from a wonderful 5-night stay at this lovely hotel; our second visit this year having previously been in April and over the years proceeding. We are big Mitsis hotel fans having stayed at many of the Mitsis hotels in Greece including the Selection Hotels. However, although this is a much smaller 4* hotel, there is something rather special about this place that draws us back time after time. Here is our review:
Hotel building. It is important to recognise when booking this accommodation that this is a city hotel set in the heart of Rhodes town – it is not a beach facing hotel although the private beach is only a 10-minute walk away. The hotel faces onto the Mitsis Grand Hotel which is currently undergoing huge renovation and is due for completion in 2028. The Petit Palais is not a new building but kept in immaculate condition throughout.
Room. We were allocated a lovely room on the fourth floor overlooking the Grand Hotel but with a side sea view. The room was big with plenty of storage space, fridge, flat screen tv and air con. The king size bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom had an over-the-bath shower which was fine and the toiletries were of a very high standard. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels provided.
Reception. 24-hour staff always friendly and ready to help with any questions you might have. Thanks to Julia, John, Ilias, Aldo and Alexandro.
Inside bar and area. There are two sections to the inside bar, a cosy and very comfortable seating and table area near to the bar and then an atrium area facing onto the road which attracts the sunshine. Drinks are served at the bar by an amazing team. Spirit alcohols are local although branded drinks can be purchased. There is a cocktail menu and from 4pm each day delicious cakes and teas are available in this area.
Restaurant. There is one restaurant offering a buffet style menu. The choice is very good providing a wide selection of both hot and cold food. I did hear one British person commenting on the variety of the food with not ever dish being to their taste. I do think it’s important to recognise that this hotel caters for several people from different countries who’s taste in food is vastly different from what the British eat. I believe that the hotel does an amazing job in trying to provide a balanced menu that caters for all the guests and I would defy anyone from not being able to find something that they would enjoy. There is always pasta and freshly made pizza at both lunchtime and dinner. The staff in the restaurant are incredible and cannot do enough to help. Thanks to Ersi, Fabiola, Alexandra and of course Nektarios on the pizza station.
Outdoor pool and bar. The hotel provides an enclosed area at the rear of the premises with a small pool, sunbeds and an elevated section with table seating and a bar. During the daytime you can enjoy freshly made crepes, hot dogs, skin-on-fries and popcorn as well as a fully stocked bar. Thanks to Michael, Vioteta and Komissa for such wonderful service. During the summer months evening entertainment is shown in this area.
However, and as many other guests have alluded to, is what makes this hotel so special are the amazing staff. All are so incredibly friendly and willing to help with many we now consider to be our friends and with whom we are in regular contact with. I want to express our very sincere thank to Margarita Kypraiou the Front Office Manager for all her help and support in arranging us airport transfers, a lovely room and being there for us throughout our stay and finally, our thanks to the hotel General Manager Mr Alex Chatziliamis again for his continued help and support. You sir, and your amazing team are a credit to the Mitsis group of companies and in doing so, wish you all well and look forward to seeing you all again in 2027.
Would I recommend this hotel? Without doubt but considering the description of the hotel, it’s location and the facilities it has to offer. If you are looking for a place to relax, enjoy great food with exemplary service but with the opportunity to explore Rhodes town and it’s surrounding areas then look no further – this hotel is perfect!

Exceptionally poor hygiene and health and safety

We have just returned from this hotel in Rhodes. I think the most important thing to say is that there is currently an epidemic of gastroenteritis in Rhodes - as confirmed by the doctor we needed to see for IV fluids, having caught the bug. If you are travelling to the area, then you need to be aware that it is very present at the moment - both amongst tourists and locals - info from the Doctor, shops etc. The hotel acknowledge that they know about it but don't inform you - several staff told us they were aware. Despite this, the hand sanitiser stations were often empty and there was nobody asking you to sanitise hands before going into the restaurant. The door handles were visibly dirty and the lift also but we never saw them being cleaned. Having lost two days of a short (and expensive stay), we were told on checkout that they do not tell people to sanitise hands as they should know the risks following Covid. Luckily I still had some anti bacterial wipes that I managed to give to an unsuspecting elderly couple who were unaware but wondered why there was a man at reception on checking in asking for the nearest hospital for him and his family. All in all it's not a 4 star hotel. Far from it. The location is great - really close to visit all the sites. Most of the staff were really nice and helpful. They did change our room following early feedback but being unwell I didn't really look properly at the new "better room" offering. The fridge cupboard door was rotten as was the sixth floor wooden balcony (trip and you would literally be a goner). Taped up plugs etc. Beach area is utterly horrendous - rubbish strewn. 4* - not in a million years and they really need to consider basic hygiene and health and safety as a matter of importance. My husband is still unwell and I'm pretty worried about the poor elderly couple who are still there. At their age nasty bugs can be dangerous. I personally believe that it is not ok to be aware of an illness that is circulating and not tell people or do anything to try to reduce the risks. It's not difficult and not expensive. To be honest, I would expect it to be part of a decent operator's regular cleaning and health and safety schedule. I've only given this a 2 star as there are some really decent and kind people working there. I would be really upset if anybody tries to defend this review. Time would be better spent filling the sanitisers and having a full health and safety review of the premises for the benefit of future customers.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are genuinely sorry to hear that you became unwell during your stay, and we certainly understand how distressing this can be, particularly during a short holiday.
That said, we would like to clarify several points in your review, as some of the statements do not reflect our actual hygiene and safety practices.
We maintain strict hygiene, cleaning and food-safety protocols throughout the hotel, with regular cleaning and disinfection of guest areas and facilities. Hand-sanitiser stations are available throughout the property, including on all guest floors, in the lobby, outside the restaurant and in the gym, and these are checked and refilled regularly. If a dispenser is found to be empty at any particular moment, it is refilled by our team as part of our routine checks.
We also take reports of illness very seriously. With approximately 450–500 guests staying at the hotel, when an isolated case is reported, our team follows established procedures and provides the necessary support to the affected guest, while taking the appropriate additional hygiene and cleaning measures.
Regarding the wider gastroenteritis situation mentioned in your review, we are aware that gastrointestinal illnesses can circulate within tourist destinations and local communities, particularly during periods of increased travel. However, this is a broader regional issue and should not be interpreted as evidence of an issue originating at our hotel. We continuously monitor the situation and maintain our established food-safety and hygiene procedures accordingly.
We also find it important to clarify that it is not consistent with our procedures for a member of our team to tell a guest that we do not encourage hand sanitization. Our sanitizing points are provided precisely to encourage good hygiene practices, and our teams are instructed to support and promote appropriate hygiene measures.
We are pleased that you found our location convenient and that many of our team members were kind and helpful. We also appreciate that our team responded to your initial room concerns by arranging an alternative room.
As for the comments regarding the hotel's cleanliness, we regularly receive very positive feedback from guests regarding our cleaning standards, and cleanliness is an area we take very seriously. Naturally, we will always review any specific maintenance concerns raised by guests and address them where necessary.
We are sorry that your illness negatively affected your holiday, and we sincerely hope that your husband has now fully recovered. However, we do not believe it would be fair to suggest that the hotel disregards hygiene or health and safety. On the contrary, these are matters we take seriously every day and actively manage through established procedures and the continuous work of our team.
We respect that your experience was disappointing, but we also believe it is important that future readers have a balanced and accurate picture of the measures in place at the hotel.

Disappointing experience – not what I’d expect from a 4-star hotel

Unfortunately, our stay at Mitsis Petit Palais in Rhodes was very disappointing, particularly when it came to cleanliness and the general standard of the hotel.
During our stay, I witnessed a cleaner cleaning the stair handrail using water from the mop bucket. This was particularly concerning as we were told by reception that there had been an “issue” within the hotel relating to sickness and diarrhoea. Unfortunately, all of our party ended up suffering with the same issue, which was extremely disappointing and had a huge impact on our holiday.
What concerned me further was what I witnessed in the restaurant/dining area. The waiters were serving water while wearing the same gloves they had been using to clear and clean tables and handle food waste, without changing them between tasks. Given that we had already been told about the “issue” in the hotel, I found this particularly concerning. You would expect much stricter hygiene procedures to be followed, especially during a situation where good hygiene practices should be a priority.
The general standard of cleanliness and maintenance was also not what I would expect from a 4-star hotel. The flooring was particularly disappointing, with areas that were damaged, cracked, lifting and showing gaps between the flooring. Nevertheless the CCTV being removed. Some of the edges also looked poorly finished. The seating also had visible staining which was in the dining area and the lobby/reception. I have attached the photos.
The pool area was another disappointment. The umbrellas are fixed, meaning you don’t really have the choice of sitting in the sun or moving into the shade when you want to. The pool wasn’t the cleanest. This was inconvenient, especially when spending time around the pool. I also witnessed the waiters dunking the plastic glasses in just running water without cleaning to standards or disinfecting them and serving drinks - again giving the “issue” in the hotel I was disgusted.
We also weren’t made aware by the provider that this is essentially a city hotel/“city stopper” I keep reading. This should have been made much clearer when booking, as it wasn’t what we were expecting when booking for an all inclusive hotel.
The room also had a lack of electrical sockets, making it difficult to charge or use multiple electrical items. For a 4-star hotel, I would expect there to be adequate access to plug sockets.
Overall, I would not personally rate this as a 4-star hotel based on our experience. The cleanliness, hygiene practices, condition of the flooring, general maintenance and facilities were below the standard I would expect from a 4-star property.
The fact that every member of our party became unwell made the experience even more disappointing. I appreciate that illness can happen on holiday and I cannot say what specifically caused it, but witnessing the hygiene practices in the hotel certainly did not give us confidence. Staffing weren’t overall helpful or approachable at times but not all.
Given the rating and price of the hotel, we expected a much higher standard and unfortunately would not choose to stay here again.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations.
We would, however, like to clarify that while we are sorry that your party experienced illness, there is no evidence establishing that this was caused by the hotel, our food or our hygiene procedures. Food safety and hygiene are taken extremely seriously, with established procedures followed throughout our food and beverage operations.
We also cannot agree with the suggestion that the hotel is misrepresented or that our general hygiene standards are inadequate. Canvas by Mitsis Petit Palais is an established, medium-sized city hotel in the centre of Rhodes Town. It is not a newly built resort, and our property concept and location are clearly presented to guests. We understand that a city hotel may not meet the expectations of guests looking for a large resort-style property, but this does not mean that the hotel is misrepresented.
We take genuine maintenance observations seriously and continuously work on improvements. At the same time, we believe that isolated observations do not fairly reflect the overall standards of the hotel or the dedication of our team.
We respect your opinion and regret that the hotel did not meet your personal expectations. We remain committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, food safety and guest service.

❤️❤️❤️

We stayed at this hotel for 7 days and had an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and well taken care of.
The staff were incredibly kind and friendly, always with a smile on their faces and always ready to help whenever we needed anything. The hotel was very clean, the food was delicious and varied, and the entire team was simply amazing.
Our towels were changed every day, our room was cleaned regularly, and the fridge was always stocked with cold water. During meals, the staff were extremely attentive, always making sure our table was cleared and asking if we needed anything else to drink or if there was anything more they could bring us.
We would especially like to thank Stela, Despina, and Mrs. Zarra, who always welcomed us with a big smile and personally showed us to our table. Their kindness and attention made us feel truly special.
At the pool, we met another wonderful team — cheerful, energetic, funny, and always so friendly. A very special thank you to Violeta, Comisa, and Mike, who took such great care of our children. Thanks to Mike’s patience and dedication, our children managed to swim on their own after just three days!
We sincerely thank the entire team for making our holiday so memorable. ❤️ We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and would be very happy to come back again!
