Very Quaint

We stayed two nights here stopping off on a trip to Austria. The room was huge with sloping wooden floors and beams. It is 16th century. Fantastic old place with plenty of character. We ate two nights there. On one night I had a steak, it was huge. It was the best steak I have ever had in my life and I am 60. Not one piece of fat or sinew on it. Highly recommended.

Many reasons to avoid it

The Good:
I had a large room, though NOT all rooms here are this large.
Historic charm with exposed timbers and sloped wood floor.
Hot shower with good pressure.
Hot water heater for making tea in your room.
The Bad:
Typical European bed: Hard and two twins pushed together. The hard bed had me tossing and turning every night.
Wi-fi sucked. Free, but as slow as molasses in winter. Even emails were horribly slow. It also kept disconnecting a lot.
Typical European breakfast. Maybe some hardboiled eggs to go with the cold cuts, cheese, bread, cereal, and yogurt.
Safety issue with no light at the first set of steps to the front door. (There is a motion detector light for the second set of stairs.)
Typical German hotel to not have bath soap or shampoo in the bathroom. They had some leftovers from previous people, but I was not that adventurous.
Exposed nails in the charming wood floors. Almost wounded myself. I had to keep moving the small area rug over it to avoid injury.
Limited outlets (one) at the desk.
The bathroom is very small. If you’re not skinny like me, you will bump yourself a lot.
Curtains are too small to stop light, but that will be the least of your worries. Other things will wake you before the sun does.
The Ugly:
Cold room. Only 1 radiator in a large room was not enough, especially when they re-set it to zero in the morning. I had to turn it on when I got back to the room every night. I was up to 3 heavy blankets to stay warm at night. No radiator in the bathroom, so it’s very cold in the morning, even when the door was left open.
The windows are very old, with zero noise and very little thermal protection. I could hear people talking outside down the street well into the early morning.
Gap under the room door, so you can hear everything in the hallway.
The loud Rathaus bells ring you awake every day at 0600. It’s literally right next door. I thought it was my alarm clock the first morning, but far worse. It lasts for two very long minutes. I think they are intended to wake the dead. Well, maybe the drunk. Not sure.
Extremely limited parking. Only 2 dedicated spots for a hotel with more than 12 rooms. Street parking is very competitive, so you may be a block or two away.

Beautiful town, very nice accommmodation

The staff were pleasant and friendly.
The room was clean (nice but nothing special) with a window overlooking the courtyard.
the restaurant nearby downstairs served good beer and tasty (German) food.
The town itself is right there. Very pretty with everything you want to see just a walk away.

Smart comfortable hotel

Lovely hotel, in a quiet little town, when we arrived there was no one there but our keys were left for us, unfortunately they got our booking wrong, but we coped, the restaurant below is not connected, so they couldn't help either. Breakfast was nice an plentiful

loved staying in small-town Germany

This is a very homey, historic old guest house - it's rather like staying at an absent cousin's house! We don't have much German, and the staff didn't have too much English, but it didn't seem to be a problem at all. Stairs of course (some steep), clean, with eclectic old furnishings, a comfy bed and fine shower. Family stayed in one of the double rooms and the apartment - the apartment at the top of the house was hot and stuffy when we arrived but just opening the window quickly solved that. Bonus is the good restaurant attached, which *stays open until 10 pm* (very nice for the traveler). We enjoyed staying in quiet, small-town Germany. Thanks for the hospitality, Blaues Haus!
