Handy stopover point

A good choice if you need to break your trip or an extra night in the Southern Highlands. Rooms are clean and comfortable, not overly flash but have all the amenities you would need. Convenient to park right at the unit door, fast and efficient check in. Happy to recommend and will use them again.

Don't stop! Keep driving past it

RUN AWAY AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN. The potholed driveway should have been a warning to us. Out of the 3 rooms we had booked, 2 of them had not been updated since the 80s. The rooms smelt and were noisy from the constant passing traffic. The beds were old slat & metal beds popular in the 80s with old blankets thrown on top. The curtains were missing hooks.
There was no one in reception when we arrived & when we left about 10 minutes later.

Budget and VERY average. Only stay if you're desperate

A 1960s motel, with a hideous 1980s 'colonial' update. Strange falling apart wooden pergola type things in the front area, that didn't look very stable. Reception mostly unmanned. Strange asian crap everywhere, soap dispensers, chinese restaurant style chairs in the room, and bed 'throws' obviously bought from Temu as were the minute thin towels in the bathroom. Bathroom was very nicely updated, the rest of the room was an appalling mess of yellowed microwaves, and air conditioner unit. Carpet tiles on the floor, that look like they haven't been cleaned for 20 years. 20 year old bedroom funiture, and a tiny non-smart TV. Highway noise was annoying as were the annoying laminated signs in the room telling me what I can and can't do. Apparently a $15 charge if you sit on the bed if didn't pay for a particular type of room. Outrageous. Obviously very much a motel run a $0 budget by a cheap owner who's trying to milk it for as much profit as possible. For $195, there are WAY better places to stay. The pictures online make it look WAY nicer than it is.

Probably Better Options in the Southern Highlands

The Poplars Inn is located on the Old Hume Highway in Braemar which is about 5km from Mittagong. It's not the most conveniently located accommodation as guests need to drive to restaurants or shops. There is a bit of traffic noise from the main road outside, and light sleepers may be disturbed.
The gardens of the property are looking a bit unkempt, and the motel generally looks in need of a freshen up.
Whilst the the room had an older "vibe", it was reasonably clean and comfortable. The bathroom looks like it has been recently renovated.
Increasingly, I'm finding that there isn't any interaction with staff at hotels and motels and the Poplar Inn is no exception. On arrival, there was an envelope with my room key on the counter, and on departure you close the door and leave the key in the room.
In summary, the Polars Inn is an OK place for a night, but I would suggest there are several better options in the Southern Highlands.

A time capsule that should have stayed buried.

I made the mistake of booking this place in a hurry via bookings.com as jet lag was making the drive home impossible. The room looks like it was furnished in the early 80’s and then completely forgotten! The beds were a choice of completely worn out and rock hard or completely worn out and saggy, although one of the many “notices” telling you what you can and can’t do, warns of additional charges if you dare to use both beds! The carpet made my skin crawl it looks so old. I certainly wasn’t game to walk on it with bare feet!
Of the many “notices” displayed around the place, a couple are in relation to if you dare to travel with a pet (telling you not to check in if you do) which I found pretty laughable, as I have stayed in pet friendly motels where the rooms were much nicer. I also have dog beds at home which are far better quality and would be much more comfortable than the beds this place provides!
Unfortunately we were too exhausted to look for somewhere else, so we endured this third rate establishment. Thankfully I had earplugs with me, as the noise from the highway is bad.
I can’t comment on the service as I never saw anyone, much less encountered them.
Yes, the shower was good, but I expect more than a decent shower from a motel room!
