Pod 5 at East Quay is a stylish and unique place to stay in Watchet. With beautiful harbour views, we enjoyed watching the boats and changing tides from the comfort of this thoughtfully designed space.
The pod combines modern comfort with creative details, including distinctive continuous line art that adds character and reflects East Quay’s artistic friendly atmosphere. Compact yet well designed, it felt cosy and practical.
Located right by Watchet Harbour, Pod 5 at East Quay is within easy reach of local shops, cafes, and West and East beach, there is a great cafe at East Quay offering great lunches, coffee, tea and famed breakfasts.

Great quirky place for short stays
We stayed in pod 1 (the living museum) for 2 nights and it is true to say that it is lovely and quirky, with all the tagged items from previous guests and interesting furnishings.
The good things - the little kitchen area is great with mini hob, fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave and all the utensils you could need. There is even tea, coffee, sugar and condiments and they give you a little (refillable) bottle of milk too. The bed is amazingly comfortable although a little smaller than we're used to. The view from upstairs is fabulous and downstairs there is a little balcony which sadly due to the very windy weather we didn't get to use. The cafe is really good for coffee and cake. When we were there (a Monday and Tuesday) it wasn't open in the evening which was a shame. We didn't try it for breakfast as the dishes weren't really my cup of tea so we bought a few bits and pieces from the little Co-op nearby.
The not so good - the stairs are VERY steep and a bit dicey when you need to pee in the night as the bathroom is downstairs. The shower is very small so could be tricky for larger visitors. Both of these facts are mentioned in the online info but the reality is often not thought about. The enamel bath sofa is very quirky but extremely uncomfortable and faces the bed instead of the beautiful harbour view. It's difficult to dry your hair and style it in the mirror as the plugs are all in the wrong places. There is nowhere comfy to sit and read a book if the weather is bad except the bed. The old packing trunks in the bedroom area look nice but serve no real useful purpose. The space could be better utilised with a comfy armchair and small side table.
I think overall it is a great place for short stays and we would definitely stay here again for 2 nights, but if you want a week's self-catering I think you would find it a bit restrictive.

Funky Over Functional. Quirky Over Quality
I stayed in Pod 1, the blurb on the website states this pod’s décor is a mixture of “pre-loved” “Found objects “. Hmm.
The furniture looks like it’s been pulled out of a skip and is hard and uncomfortable, in fact I found the entire pod uncomfortable and cramped and not a place I felt inclined to linger or to relax in; I couldn’t chill out with a book for example. It was most definitely funky over functional, and quirky over quality, and although the pods may well be “ Designed for the adventurous traveller..” it should also be added they are designed for the agile traveller also.
The “ship-style” staircase was a challenge, especially for a 60-year-old man with a busy prostrate who makes several trips to the loo in the night. To be fair the website does say “.. the steep stairs within the Pod are not suitable for those with mobility issues “however, I don’t feel this is highlighted enough. I don’t consider myself to have mobility issues, but I certainly had an issue with mobility in this pod because of the stairs; they are treacherous.
I also found the furnishings uncomfortable and tatty, the shower cubicle very small (and I am not a large man) bathroom dark, the Eco-friendly toilet paper is a false economy as one uses twice/ three times as much because of the quality (or lack) of it, and the location of the reception is not obvious not being signposted. Finally, and possibly the most annoying aspect of my stay was the lack of attention/ service I experienced at East Quay.
I stayed three nights, and my room was not serviced during my stay. I had to use the out of hours number to request basic items that would have been replenished if the pod had been serviced and I have to say the floors were grubby when I arrived and remained so. It’s all very well to have a random stuff and clutter on every surface in the “living museum “but what about the essentials for a comfortable stay!? And please, please don’t respond by saying I should have requested my pod be cleaned, I don’t want to spend my stay climbing up and down my “ship-style staircase “to your reception or café to ask for loo rolls or my pod to be cleaned.
My advice to those who follow in my footsteps to Watchet, think very carefully and do your research before booking in at East Quay. And my advice to the proprietors of East Quay, it is what it is, design-wise and can’t be changed, however, a little care and attention to both your pods and your guests would enhance the experience.

Poor internal design, missing lots of necessities
We stayed in the Immersive Art Pod, it frighteningly moved regularly, particularly if windy or someone walked up the external stairs etc.
Inside the design was quite poor and badly designed. The views were the main reason we booked this pod, they were spectacular but there was nowhere to sit to enjoy them. We put a load of pillows/cushions on the wooden storage box at the foot of the bed so we could sit and enjoy the lovely views. The 2 stools provided were facing a wall! There was no hairdryer, if you wanted to dry/style your hair there was also no mirror in the living area, only in the bathroom which of course has no plug sockets. There was no hanging area for any coats or clothes, also no storage area for cases/bags. It was definitely in need of a woman's touch to address the glaring omissions, it was very impractical.

A Cultural Gem
We stayed in pod one . Fabulous harbour view , comfortable bed and quirky interior .
Helpful friendly staff , fabulous cafe/ restaurant just downstairs ( 10% off to guests including wine ) we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner .
Pop up DJ on the Friday which was fun and art exhibitions and resident artists all within the hub . A great welcoming community feel.
Only a stone throw from the rest of the village which has much to offer including 3 free museums , pubs , and many independent shops all set beside the harbour .
