A wonderful experience.

A fabulous five night break. The garden room was excellent : spotlessly clean and refreshed every morning. The housekeeping team did a fabulous job.
Breakfast was excellent and the evening meals in the Castle dining room were superb. We cant believe it doesn’t have three AA rosettes. We will be back.

Not a service you'd expect at their prices!

After asking around, we were advised that the best fine dining was at the Star Castle Hotel, so we decided to go there for a special meal for my Partner’s birthday.
Big mistake.
Firstly ~ There were no prices on the menus. We could have asked but decided, as it was a special evening out, so we wouldn’t bother.
Secondly ~ We booked for 8pm and arrived early. Whilst waiting, and just before 8pm, we were told, they were very busy and our table wouldn’t be ready on time. Eventually, we were told our table was ready and we were shown the door into the restaurant and told “The restaurant’s through there”. On entering, every table, within view, was occupied with the exception of one table for two, so we assumed it was for us.
Thirdly ~ After a considerable wait, a waiter eventually came over and asked if we’d been shown to our table. We said no, with no response from the waiter except to leave the menus.
Fourthly ~ We waited a very long time for the starters to arrive, and when they did, we thought it might be because they didn’t want a long time to pass between courses. How wrong we were.
Next ~ After another very long wait, the main course arrived, after which the plates were cleared, and we were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu, to which we answered, yes.
Next ~ Again we waited a ridiculous amount of time before even seeing the menus, and again waited a long time before receiving our desserts, even though there was no cooking involved.
Finally ~ At their prices, being busy is absolutely no excuse when it was known, well in advance, that they were fully booked and the service was well below the standards anyone would accept.

We are so sorry that you didn't enjoy your meal with us, particularly for such a special occasion. We are extremely proud of the food we serve in both our restaurants and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. However, it is clear that, on this occasion, we didn't achieve the high standards to which we aspire, please accept our apologies for this. We do hope you'll give us another opportunity to prove that we really are the best fine dining on the island.

Looking forward to another visit.

Our second visit to the castle and it is really a stunning place to stay. The staff were very helpful especially in the vine restaurant, where the food was absolutely fantastic. The sea view from the rooms is beautiful and the gardens are very well looked after. There are a few things that could have been better, like the menu in the vine could have changed during our 6 night stay, it would be nice to have some flowers on the little terraces outside the rooms, and the fittings in the bedrooms are a little tired, but overall a fabulous place to stay.

Where to start? This hotel is excellent.

This was our second time staying at Star Castle, we first visited last year, and it hooked us.
It's the ideal "gateway" experience hotel for the beautiful Isles of Scilly.
The main hotel building sits on a hilltop and occupies a 16th Century castle, built during the reign of Elizabeth R. This makes the hotel very atmospheric and provides some stunning sea views and over the harbour.
Some of the rooms are in the castle building; we have never stayed in any of those, so I can't comment on those.
The other rooms are "Garden Rooms". In effect they are 2 rows of "Chalets", but built to a very high standard. One row has sea views, the other row has a view over the communal tropical gardens, some also feature a shared private garden to the rear with a terrace. That is the type that we have used. These rooms are spacious, immaculately clean, well appointed, frankly our favourite hotel rooms anywhere.
I believe dogs are permitted in these rooms with prior arrangement; if this bothers you, don't let it, as there was no sign to us that a dog had ever set foot in the room.
If I could suggest one improvement it would be the provision of a mini bar, as the main hotel bar (in the Dungeon!) is quite a walk; and it would save using room service.
The sound proofing between these rooms could also be a little better. This didn't bother us as we were tired enough to sleep well, but if you're a light sleeper, it's worth considering.
There are 2 hotel restaurants, the main one is the Dining Room in the castle itself, which is a bit more formal, atmospheric and has a menu that changes every day, with a few options to choose from.
The other restaurant is called The Vine and feels more informal, but is still excellent. The name is derived from the fact that a 50 year old vine is growing from an old potting shed next door to the conservatory building that houses the restaurant, enters the conservatory via a side window, and effectively sprawls across the roof space. This is also very atmospheric. The menu in the Vine doesn't change on a daily basis.apart from the provision of specials from time to time.
The food in both restaurants is truly exceptional and good use is made of local produce, including fish and seafood. Breakfast is served in the Vine, and is superb. It's nice to see smoked haddock and kippers included in the menu. I had both and can confirm that both were lovely. The kippers were particularly good.
The waiting staff are a real credit to the hotel. They are mostly young people, but they are very polite, friendly, and dedicated to making sure that your meal is a pleasant experience. The wine list is also a treat to behold. Wine is available mostly by the bottle, but there are also half bottles available and also some wines available by the glass.
The Dungeon Bar is atmospheric, in the basement of the castle as its name suggests. It's a nice place for a pre or post evening meal drink, but I can't imagine hanging around there much longer than that.
One improvement that I'd like to see would be the provision of a second bar, somewhere near the Vine, which could probably be staffed from there. I think it would make the terrace between the vine and the pool, plus the garden benches and tables a bit more useful, it would also mean that garden room residents don't have to go all the way to the Dungeon Bar - just a thought.
The pool: my wife used this, she really enjoyed it. It's an indoor pool that is housed in a conservatory type structure.
The boat service: Rafe is the resident Captain, most mornings he comes around at breakfast with his itinerary for the day, and to offer trips on his Mitchell 31 boat, the Calypso II. We went on a trip around Samson, Mincarlo and Tresco, it was fantastic. These trips are distinct from those offered by St Mary's Boat Association (who are also very good) but on Calypso II you're getting a more personal experience; well worth the money.
Selfishly, I feel a bit worried about posting such a glowing review, as I would always want to be able to get a space, but, honestly, they deserve the praise and the business, and to thrive, so I wish them the best of success.
We will be returning, as long as they have the space!

Masterchef class food. Just delightful.

We had the most lovely meal in the restaurant.
It was very Masterchef, beautifully cooked and presented.
It was quite expensive but such a treat.
So much history in the castle too.
