Surprisingly good food at the village inn.

We'd heard good reports of the food at the Red Lion Inn in nearby Sidbury village, but we had not been before as absolutely no details of their food offering were available. We took the plunge, booked a table, and took the very scenic 10 mins drive down the A375 from Honiton. Sidbury is an attractive village surrounded by rolling farmland and features the infant River Sid. The Inn sits in the main street and is opposite the churchyard. On-street parking is limited, so the best option is to use the free village car park. It's an unpretentious local pub that has clearly led a hard but interesting life, judging by the many curious items displayed on the walls. I had a disappointingly average pint of our local Otter Bitter, which if anything, wasn't quite cold enough. There is a printed menu, but our lunch was ordered from the many Specials Boards. We ate in the small dining area at the back of the pub.
Our Chicken Masala and Buttermilk Chicken Burger were hot, delicious, flavourful and well presented. My side dish of onion bhaji was excellent and better than our local Indian Takeaway. A dessert menu was not offered, so we completed our meal with coffees under the parasols out in the cool courtyard, luckily nobody was smoking out there but large ashtrays were on every table. The toilets were off the courtyard and though old they were perfectly usable and even provided hot water. The pub doesn't advertise its menu Online or on Social Media. It is baffling that they offer such good and reasonably priced food but don't publicise it. At the very least a mere five minutes spent posting a monthly photo of their Specials Board to Social Media should be well within anyone's ability. TA doesn't allow me to award the 4.5 stars the Red Lion Inn probably deserves. We will certainly return soon to sample more of the wide selection of dishes offered, particularly the range of Indian dishes.

Great pub stay

From our initial amazing welcome from Jaz and Bip's fabulous food we had a great stay. Lovely clean room. large confy bed. All in all great stay would highly recommend if you're in the area.

Amazing pub amazing people

Found this gem of a pub by chance. Staff & locals really friendly & couldn’t do enough for us.
Food was amazing & room was great had everything we needed for our overnight stay.
Really comfy bed too.
Spent the night laughing & drinking with staff & locals, had a great time.Will definitely be going back

Amazing food with a great atmosphere

We booked two days in advance and were greeted with a wonderfully warm welcome. Our table overlooked the bar, giving us a great view of the lively atmosphere.
The ales were kept beautifully – the Otter Ale in particular was absolutely sublime.
As for the food, I chose an Indian starter and main, and the lamb curry was one of the best I’ve had in a long time – rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. My wife opted for the chicken pasta, which was equally delicious.
To top it off, the bill was cheaper than expected, making the whole experience even better.
I would wholeheartedly recommend The Red Lion to anyone visiting Sidbury – it’s a gem worth trying.

Poor service. Turning customers away for food before the last orders of 9pm advertised time!!

Do not recommend this pub. Very poor service. Is the Red Lion doing so well that they can afford not take food orders before the advertised last order time of 9pm? Really!!
Find a more welcoming pub. Customers let down on Friday night. Hence the poor review.
