Welcoming & Charming Historic Hotel

I was meeting colleagues for a management 'awayday' over two days in the Nantwich area and reserved a double room at the Crown for one night.
I took the train to Nantwich station and enjoyed the very pleasant walk from there to the hotel, where I arrived slightly early, but was delighted to be efficiently checked-in and shown immediately to my room.
The property is a real gem. Centuries old, full of oak beams, wooden floorboards, and a quirky main staircase which has settled over the years into a crooked style. The place oozes old-world charm.
My room was spacious, with a lovely comfy double bed, easy chair, desk, desk stool, large wardrobe, two bedside cabinets, scatter cushions and two large windows with views over the interior courtyard. All furniture was either antique, or tasteful reproduction, which along with the traditional soft-furnishings were entirely in-keeping with their historic setting. The bathroom was spacious with nice shower, WC, basin and some shelving for toiletries. There was a large flatscreen TV, iron & ironing board (on request), hairdryer and electric fan.
I enjoyed a few drinks with colleagues in the characterful bar during the evening and a wonderful, well-presented full English breakfast in the morning.
A lovely, welcoming inn with country-style appeal.

This is an amazing hotel, given it's 450 ish years old it really is like you are stepping back in time.
Uneven floors and steps are a feature of this amazing place.
The hotel has a great bar and served an excellent breakfast.
I am so glad I visited,if I find myself in the area again I'll return 😄

Numerous food venues available. Better

Visited after waiting as instructed at the desk
“ sit anywhere”. Drinks orders taken by pleasant member of staff and after food orders taken and shortly arrived. 3 baskets of chips were ordered as a side order. On arrival they were white and not cooked. I returned them to be cooked again and they were delivered not much better. To the chef !!!! When you put them in the fryer you have to turn it on.
Any professional kitchen member would not have served these. The only recipe this is for, it’s disaster.

We won’t be rushing back

Having read the website and the reviews I was quite excited about staying here. The hotel looks lovely from the outside …….. The promised warm welcome didn’t happen. The receptionist gave me a form but didn’t explain what she wanted as she was too busy chatting with other members of staff. A second person took over and I was given the key but no details of where to go or what to expect. I asked for a fan for the room but was told they didn’t have enough to go round. Why? The first set of stairs were very uneven and twisty (part of the quirky character) but the second set were very challenging. I eventually found the room and was not impressed. I know it’s an old building but the room was very drab with just a couple of uninteresting pictures on the wall, and had a bit of an unpleasant smell to it. The furniture appeared to be made out of scaffolding and kitchen worktop. The tea tray was very sparse with no biscuits and despite the heat no bottled water provided. The only seating was a small stool or the very uncomfortable bed. My biggest bug bear - no electrical sockets by the bed although they had left some old round pin sockets.
The bathroom was quite spacious but there was no ventilation so it was also very hot. No plug for the sink which was chipped and the taps were in need of descaling. The towels were only bath towels so not very big. Toiletries were a small bar of soap one small shower gel and one small shampoo. We decided to sleep on top of the quilt as it was so hot and we thought it might make the bed more comfortable. That was in vain so neither of us slept well.
Breakfast however was lovely apart from the distracted member of staff from check in who completely forgot our requests. The other good points were fast WiFi and free parking though not many spaces.
To sum up - not the best experience so we won’t be back or recommending the hotel to anyone

Great restaurant & food but not so great hotel rooms

We have stayed at the Crown Hotel several times over the last 3 or 4 years, a fact that should speak volumes but sadly our stay this weekend was below average. The hotel seems to be running on minimal staff as opposed to previous visits when there were lots of smiling faces around. The bedrooms have a feel of neglect now, our room was in need of a deep clean - we pulled the luggage stand out from next to the wardrobe & a shower of dust hit us as we opened it out. I'm sure the duvet cover was freshly laundered but it's appearance was not crisp & fresh.
The hotel occupies a very old building & as such does not have air conditioning so the rooms can be very hot. They do supply a fan but they do not supply complimentary water in the rooms, something that budget hotels do these days. We were left wondering why they had left 2 glases next to the kettle then?
As I said it is a very old building & you expect quirky stairs & creaky floors but why the bed that was as creaky as the floors! Unfortunately we did not sleep at all well because of the bed & also we could'nt open the windows at night due to the noise of late night revellers & the very early morning noise of bottles been emptied into bins outside.
The star of this hotel is the restaurant (Crown Bar & Grill) which I have given a separate 5* review for its excellent food & staff.
Thanks to all the lovely staff we have met that really look after the guests but sorry Crown Hotel Bar & Grill we won't be returning.
