Beware future guests, this house is truly squalor
Writing a review here because I can see that this property is still being advertised on Airbnb and Booking.com and I want to warn potential future guest away.
I've genuinely never had as awful as an experience as I did staying at this place. If my partner or I had been sober, we'd have packed up and gone home.
- Upon arrival, we were left waiting outside the house for 2+ hours despite the advert saying there was a lock box to allow for self check in. The host was unapologetic on the phone, kept saying she'd be there in 20 minutes, an hour, etc. only for it to end up being 3 hours after we'd said we would arrive and given warning beforehand for, as requested.
- The host was either drunk, high, or completely not with it. Despite us asking several times to be left alone to get ready as we were hours late to our plans, she continually kept talking, rambling about random things in the house that we didn't need to know about. She didn't seem to hear anything we were saying and just kept talking at us.
- The room, bathroom, and everything about the house was dirty. I was not expecting luxury for the price we'd paid, but I don't think a basic, comfortable bed, washed sheets or pillows that were bought this side of the last century is too much to ask.
- The ad had actually stated the bathroom was private, which it wasn't. It also did not have a working lock so myself and my partner showered in fear of other guests or the host just walking in.
- Finally, after a truly awful sleep, we were awoken early in the morning to the hose arguing with other guests about their stay, as they had complained to booking.com. We quite literally heard her shouting down the phone that 'they're with me now. they're happy!' while they loudly replied they weren't. She then proceeded to slam doors, shout to others on the phone and make it genuninely impossible to get any further sleep - which was not great considering we had a four-hour drive home ahead of us.
- To top it all off, as we left, we were trying to get out of there as quickly as possible. At that point, we didn't even really feel safe. The host asked us as we were putting on our shoes and returning the key whether we'd enjoyed our stay to which we replied "no". And she then followed us out shouting abuse at us, saying we'd kept the other guests up till the early morning (we'd gotten in at 3am and immediately undressed and gone to sleep, so that wasn't true) and other various stuff that at this point, we weren't listening to. She was still shouting from the ginnel as we pulled away in the car.
There are various reviews saying that the host is nice and the place is perfect on both airbnb and booking.com. My guess is the host has found a way to fake these reviews. Please be careful. She wasn't just a bad host and the house wasn't just not as advertised, the house felt genuinely unsafe and the host, potentially dangerous and most definitely on something.
We actually received a full refund after little to no questioning by airbnb, which I think is quite rare and therefore suggests they might simply be ready to refund guests rather than properly investigate this place.
Please watch out if you're staying in Hackney Wick. This place is called 'Tranquil rooms' on booking.com and simply 'home in greater london' on airbnb. Do not be fooled by the low price and just book a cheap hotel instead.
