Lovely building in a fabulous location
Our room, the Buckingham Suite, was great. It was big and airy, had 2 double beds, one being on a plinth in the turret, and an enormous spa bath.
A spa bath is a definite big tick and comfy beds with good pillows is another big tick. I'm fussy about my pillows and these were some of the best I've had in the many hotels I've visited.
There were a few areas where attention to detail was lacking, ie wall lights had missing shades and a shelf in the bathroom had the missing glass shelf part (but actually could be used as a towel rail if I'm putting a positive spin on it!)
A window pane was smashed (totally understand that it's a listed building and that creates issues) which I did report but only because there was a large loose shard that for health and safety reasons would actually be better to be removed.
In general though, we were very happy with the room and would definitely stay in it again.
It's great to see that management do see that some refurbishment is needed and are addressing it. I'd much rather stay in a hotel that has original features, maybe a bit quirky and every room is different, rather than the standardized so called budget inns or similar, especially if the price is comparable, and to be fair, currently it is!
Aside from the general maintenance, there are some logistical issues which hopefully will be tightened because these are the areas that are more difficult to overlook. The hotel has a lovely rooftop bar which we visited on our first night. Unfortunately it was closing at 9pm because it was quiet. The girl serving did offer us wine or bottled beer, although we did feel terrible that we might be forcing her to stay! She assured us we were absolutely fine but we had one and then left. The next night there was a private event so it was closed. Absolutely fine. Next night it was closed due to staff illness.
The dining area is lovely and the full English breakfast (served until 11.30am offering huge flexibility) was genuinely well done and delicious. The orders got a bit muddled, ie white bread instead of brown, fried egg rather than scrambled but in the grand scheme of things, so what!? Not an issue.
However, on our third morning we arrived at 10.15am and the room was a bit busier and it was obvious there was a problem. We were sat there for 20 minutes before we were attended to. It took another 10 minutes to get a pot of tea. We were then told there were no eggs, no problem, we'd just forgo the eggs. However, we were then told an order hadn't arrived and we could have a bacon sandwich, which we did. The full breakfast was beautifully presented, the bacon sandwich looked like something you'd get at a greasy spoon.
It's little inconsistencies that make all the difference.
My husband has spent over 30 years in the hospitality industry in a range of roles including waiting on, VIP guest host and F&B supervisor and now currently part of the concierge team at a 4 star hotel. We both know the energy required to maintain guest happiness and managing expectations, so a shout out to the very friendly and hardworking staff because they are on the front line when things don't quite go to plan.
All in all, this is a 3 star hotel that I feel deserves it. The building and it's history deserve to do well. The new owners investing in it deserve to do well. The staff who work there deserve it to do well so they can be proud to be part of it's heritage and feel valued in the jobs that they do.
In some ways I feel that it attempts to aim for 4 stars when it honestly doesn't need to, just stick to doing 3 stars well.
We'd hate to see it go the way of a well known large hotel chain that have the most beautiful buildings but then operate a minimal reinvestment strategy.
We look forward to seeing it's progress and would be more than happy to return as Liverpool is one of our favourite quick, city breaks when we are off work together!!

Thank you very much for your detailed review from your stay. I'm delighted that you recognised that we are working throughout the hotel with a new team and that we are beautifying the building as we continue to work through this fine historic building.
We are currently decorating all public access areas including all corridors and adding new carpet throughout. Further to this, we have recently added new decor and comfortable seating in the QuarterDeck restaurant and bar.
Our next approach will be a permanent museum on floor 1 in about 9 months and we are looking forward to this, having previously held the exhibition in the Grand Hall for 3 months.
We certainly welcome you back so you can see the beautification we are doing to this building and thank you for your kind comments. They have been shared with senior management so we can see a very well structured feedback review provided.
Warm regards
Jonathon Wild
Guest Relations Manager.

Staff were ok but when asking for an early checking stated they were extremely busy and full so fair enough couldn’t accommodate. Knowing it was busy they still proceeded to have 1 staff member do the check in at 4pm which resulted in queue . I would not stay again.

The bed was really comfortable and the shower was nice, which made for a pleasant stay overall. However, the air conditioning wasn’t working, which was an issue during the middle of a hot summer. The room became quite warm and uncomfortable, especially at night.

A ruined day
We arrived at the hotel on the evening of 15th July. Early warning sign was the £100 deposit and proof of identity check.
We were directed to our room on the 5th floor, as I remember. There were no signs to room numbers so the reception staff member soon followed us to the area (she must have seen us on cctv) and directed us to our room. Renovation works are clearly ongoing and much needed - the carpets in the corridors are filthy.
Our room was clean but shabby. Liveable for a night and an early morning start.
However, when we returned from dinner and settled in for the night, the air conditioning wasn’t working and the fan in the room (placed because of a known air conditioning issue?) was also ineffective.
Needless to say, we spent a restless night.
There was worse to come…
We had booked breakfast, commencing 8am as we needed to be at the Philharmonic Hall at 09:15. Our daughter was en route to share breakfast and have photos in her gown on the roof terrace. We arrived at the restaurant at 8am to be informed that there was no breakfast service available. The member of staff we found was very apologetic, ultimately it was not her area of responsibility.
The staff at the hotel appear to be beleaguered - they must have to apologise constantly for the failings of the wider process.
I have provided the same feedback, as above, in response to the automated request I received after our stay.
I have also emailed the hotel owner Christopher Carline and the Guest Services Manager, Jonathan Wild, neither of whom had the courtesy to respond.

Thank you for your detailed review with regards to your stay at our hotel. You will see that when you have e-mailed me directly that you will have had an automatic reply as I have been out of the office for the last four days. That is why you have not yet had a direct response. I will pick this up when I am back in the office.
There are a number of points so I will attempt to keep this brief and respond via e-mail. On booking, it is clear that there is a security deposit in your standard terms and conditions. This is something that you will have read and confirmed by accepting the booking.
On each floor, including the ground floor, there are clear signs to each floor. Once you are on the floor, there are further signs to show your room number. I'm sorry if there was difficulty in this area.
We do not have working air conditioning and this is not displayed on our website or any other booking sites.
I am frustrated that you were not able to take breakfast during your stay. I will of course review this in my e-mail to understand what the position was on the day.
Thank you for your feedback. As stated, I am out of the office at present so not answering e-mails. There is an automatic reply to show when I am back in this office and you will have received this after e-mailing me.
Warm regards
