Without doubt a place to return to.

Had my birthday lunch at the Marquis today and what a very enjoyable time was had.
The service was excellent, the staff friendly and couldn't have been more accommodating. The food and the house wine was delicious. It would be difficult to find anywhere better. I think the owner should be very proud of his staff and establishment.

What a great shame!

I am really sorry to be writing this. It is my second review of the Marquis. The Venue is amazing, the staff are fantastic but regrettably, the place is severely let down by the food. The first time we went the food was really good but I have been many times since and each time everything has been mediocre at best. The final visit was for an afternoon Tea. Not the cheapest but hoped it would be worth it. As previously mentioned, venue and staff are fantastic but the "afternoon Tea" a real let down. Firstly, the table was really unbalanced which is not good if trying to pour and drink Tea. A member of staff brought a half cork to put under one leg to balance the table and I noticed they had to do this for other people too. Later on I noticed quite a few "half corks" laying on the floor so this is obviously an ongoing problem. The chairs are leather (or pseudo leather) covered and on each visit I have noticed they are increasingly dirty with blackened arms and now most of them have the stuffing poking out of the end of the arms. Not what one would expect from a venue like this. Lastly, for the afternoon Tea: The filled rolls were quite nice but the scones, well I can only describe them as a cross between a rock cake and a bread roll! The cakes looked very pretty but we couldn't eat them all so we were given a box to put some in to take home. When we did try them they were not at all nice and ended up in the bin.! So, looks like that was the final visit. Great shame!

Food Ok but Service shocking !!!

I was really looking forward to an afternoon tea here with my family to celebrate my 60th Birthday but what a disappointment. In wasn’t even down to the food that was actually quite nice but unfortunately the service was a big let down. Never offered more drinks after the initial one we had on arrival. When we did ask the waiter could we order more he said of course, order never arrived. The table was never cleared throughout our visit even though several staff members passed our table. Asked twice for our bill never came eventually had to all get up and go to the person sitting at the desk inside the entrance !!! Then we went to look around the garden and got told very rudely you can’t come down here there’s a wedding which is fine but a nicer way of communicating this without being so rude would have been more appropriate !!! And rope off those areas if that’s the case !! We won’t be returning that’s for sure !!

Served Reheated Steak.

Booked a last minute anniversary getaway.
Visited last year for the first time for food and drinks. Had a great experience so decided to book for our wedding anniversary and stay for the night.
This visit the food was very disappointing. My husband ordered the sirloin on the bone medium rare and when arrived was cold so sent back .
They then returned shortly with a replacement ,this one was over cooked and chewy. When I asked the manager if it was the same £50 steak just reheated she had togo and check with the chef , it was !
I’m absolutely socked in all my years eating out I have never had the same food reheated ( especially a steak ) and served back to the customer.
Honestly we booked this hotel and restaurant because we were expecting a special night of food and drink and instead we got reheated steak.
They also seemed short staffed from the time we arrived my husband had to keep going to the bar for drinks and then at dinner had to keep getting up to ask for service.
Really disappointing with the managers response , she didn’t seem bothered just said she would remove the steak from the bill , like that was really good of her. Eventually took 50% off the bottle of wine we had and was offered a third steak but by then I had finished my dinner and my husband had gone passed wanting to try again.
So gutted as we have now moved close to this restaurant and would have expected to be visiting on a more regular basis.

Beatiful building and setting. Excellent staff. Food 7/10. Its classical which is fine but maybe uninteresting.
