What a cute place to stay! We loved our adorable room and would stay here again. It was clean, comfortable, and very well located. The staff was also very helpful.

Lunch

Lunch was disappointing! The sausage rolls were under-cooked. There is a long queue for a table. Otherwise, it is a nice venue.

Horrible food quality and a premium price

Following the recommendation of the Michelin guide a few family members and I decided to dine at Castle Inn. We were asked to put a £ 40 deposit against our reservation which we found to be a bit excessive as the restaurant was mostly empty on a Friday evening. Upon arrival the surroundings and ambiance were nice, but unfortunately the food was severely disappointing both in terms of quantity and price. From the starters we chose the mushrooms which were deep fried in thick batter and were overall bland. Our main issue was with our mains. Between us we had a steak, the burger and the pork belly all three of which had really low quality meat which was not tender to the extent that we were struggling to cut and chew it. Specifically the steak, considering its price point, was unacceptably poor.

Castle Combe - Inn: be cautious

The Castle Inn is beautifully located right in the heart of the stunning village of Castle Combe. The village itself is exceptional, and the inn benefits greatly from its central position. The exterior is very attractive, with lovely flower decorations creating a welcoming first impression. Inside, the restaurant has the informal atmosphere one would expect from a traditional British pub.
Unfortunately, our experience did not fully match the charm of the surroundings. The lunch menu felt quite limited, especially considering the prices charged. Apart from the fish and chips and burger options, the other two main choices available were a loaf roll and a curry, which made the selection feel rather restricted.
We ordered fish and chips with haddock. I chose the fish and chips just to be safe. The fish, batter and chips were fairly standard — exactly what one would expect — but the portion came with only a small serving of smashed peas and a small portion of a mayonnaise-based sauce. There was no salad or additional garnish. At £22, it felt expensive for the quality and presentation.
My wife ordered the burger, but she was disappointed with the taste of the meat. It came with fried wedges and, again, no salad — just a single green leaf inside the burger. At another £22, it also felt overpriced.
To make matters worse, a 10% service charge was added automatically to the bill, which amounted to an extra £4.40. Given the overall experience, this felt difficult to justify. When paying, the cashier thanked us; I simply said nothing, as I preferred not to complain at that moment and just remain polite.
Castle Combe is absolutely worth visiting, and the location of the Castle Inn is wonderful. However, based on our lunch experience, the food quality and value for money did not meet expectations. The beautiful setting deserves a dining experience that matches it.

Fabulous place to stay

We stayed at The Castle Inn which is right in the centre of Castle Combe. We loved it, the staff were very kind and worked hard to make sure everything was spot on. The food was great but make sure you book in advance because it does get busy. Breakfast is cooked to order and as a result is excellent. You also benefit from free parking. Castle Combe is an amazing place to visit, it’s like stepping back in time. So if you want to experience a special break this is definitely the place to stay.
