My happy place

Im always genuinely happy when I stay here, I think it’s because I only ever pay around £55 or less. Tonight’s price was £55 and I was given a twin room on the 7th floor which normally means nicer rooms and I was right! I must have been upgraded! Extras like tall fan, fridge, coffee machine etc and walk in shower. No big towels in the room though which is unfortunate really and shouldn’t happen ! Also tea bag left in the nice tea pot with cold tea !!!!! Anyway just sat in my chair by the window right now and might possibly stay another night if the price is right !

Never Again

We are returning guests to this hotel and have enjoyed previous stays. Whilst there have been issues, these have usually been resolved. However, our last stay was the last straw.
The room was filthy and dated, with broken lights on the wall. . I’ll let the pics speak for themselves.
Also a total of 2 power sockets to cater for the TV, 2x lamps and a kettle, let alone to charge essentials like mobile phones and tablets etc - no usb ports. It was like going back to the 70’s. Never Again.

Dirty

No towels in room, half a toilet roll for 2 nights, paid £480.no toiletries.room wasn't cleaned 2nd day.room was filthy.fan was filthy, pubic hair around bottom of toilet.bathroom door was broke and I was scared the kids could get locked in.dust over the headboard of bed.just an awful experience for the price we paid.no entertainment at all.the breakfast was tasteless. Came earlier this year and loved it but never again.bath was filthy and the bath mat I didn't touch it was horrible we had to only shower.the male working in the pool was ace and a cleaner brought us duvet covers the 2nd day ,she was nice but reception staff seemed not to care.the windows again were filthy and curtains were ripped.also the skirting boards were in a state .

Bed, no breakfast please!

Love the hotel, cannot fault the decor, cleanliness, or staff at all.
Our room was fully equiped with everything you could need, plug holes near beds, and lots of them, tv, fan, hairdryer, bathroom was lovely, big walk in shower, however, the breakfast was a no from us, you could see through the bread, and walked around town on the bacon... but you cant have everything!
I'd stay here again, just breakfast not included.

Neglected

The Grand Hotel was comfortable enough for a short stay, but it is desperately in need of an update. In quite a few places the hotel looks tired, neglected and, frankly, a bit pitiful. It feels like a hotel that could be considerably better with some investment and attention.
The staff were generally very nice. There was one strange moment during check-in when the gentleman checking me in — I think his name was Dimal — suddenly dropped everything and ran off without saying anything, leaving me standing there with absolutely no idea what was happening. Another female member of staff eventually came over and explained that he'd had to make a phone call. I'm not really going to complain about that because, judging by the way he suddenly ran off, I assume it was some sort of emergency. It was just a very odd start to the stay.
One of my biggest complaints, though, is the complete lack of proper plug sockets next to the bed. There are old-style USB ports, but no standard three-pin sockets. Hotels really need to realise that bedside power isn't just about people charging their phones.
I have sleep apnoea and am medically required to use a CPAP machine when I sleep, so having no socket by the bed is a genuine problem, not just a minor inconvenience. I had to go back down to reception and ask for an extension lead.
Maintenance later brought one to the room, and that was an experience in itself. The gentleman acted as though this extension lead was some priceless family heirloom that had been handed down through generations. He repeatedly told me that I must return it to reception or I'd be fined £20. Not once or twice — at least five times before he would eventually hand it over. I understood perfectly well the first time. I'm 41 years old, and by the end of it I felt like I was being spoken to like a child who couldn't be trusted with an extension lead.
To make matters worse, the extension lead didn't even work, so I then had to go all the way back down to reception again and ask for another one.
Breakfast was probably the worst part of the stay.
My daughter is admittedly a fussy eater, which obviously isn't the hotel's fault. She found a pain au chocolat and a banana that she liked, ate them, then went back to get another of each. They'd gone and weren't replenished. When we asked about it, we basically just got a shrug. That's very poor for a buffet breakfast that people are paying for.
I went for the "full English", and it was terrible. Everything seemed rubbery and as though it had been sitting around far too long. The eggs had the texture of dog toys and the black pudding could have doubled as hockey pucks. It was genuinely one of the poorest hotel breakfasts I've had.
That's really the overwhelming impression I came away with: there just doesn't seem to be enough care going into the place. The individual members of staff I dealt with were mostly friendly, but the upkeep, facilities, breakfast and general standards give the impression of a hotel being allowed to coast along rather than anybody actively trying to make it good.
The room itself was comfortable enough and we slept fine, so I can't say the whole stay was a disaster. But comfortable is about as far as I'd go. It certainly wasn't enjoyable, and having now seen the large number of similarly low-scoring reviews, I can understand why they're there.
There are better hotels nearby, and next time I'd choose one of them.
