Home Hotel Gabelshus - During my stay in Oslo, I stayed at the 4-star Home Hotel Gabelshus and was very satisfied with the overall experience. The hotel is located in the quiet Frogner district, which is one of the most attractive areas of the city, while still offering excellent access by tram and bus. My room was clean, comfortable, and cozy, exactly what I needed after a full day of sightseeing. There was a slight musty smell in the room upon arrival, but airing it out on the first day solved the issue. I was also pleasantly impressed by the friendly and helpful staff. The biggest advantage for me was the food and refreshments included in the room rate. The breakfast was varied and delicious, afternoon refreshments included cakes and pastries, and a simple dinner was served every evening, which can save a significant amount of money in Norway. The weekly dinner menu was displayed at the reception, which I found very useful. I also appreciated the hotel’s strong focus on sustainability. There was a lot of recycling, and leftover food from the previous day was sometimes offered again as an additional option at dinner, helping to reduce food waste. Another great feature was the complimentary drinks corner near the restaurant, where drinking water, sparkling water, tea, and coffee were available 24 hours a day. On our last day, the hotel stored our luggage after check-out, and we were still welcome to enjoy the complimentary beverages, which was a very nice touch. The hotel also offers a small free sauna and fitness room, both of which I used several times during my stay. I liked the building’s historic atmosphere, while at the same time it provided all the modern comforts needed for a pleasant visit. The quiet surroundings and proximity to Frogner Park and other attractions were additional benefits. Rooms are not cleaned daily, and housekeeping must be requested in advance, but we actually appreciated this environmentally friendly approach. We booked directly through the hotel’s reservation system and received loyalty points as an extra benefit. The price of €680 for three nights felt reasonable for Oslo. Parking in the surrounding area was available but paid. If I return to Oslo in the future, I would definitely consider staying here again. The hotel also had a lovely winter garden where we enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners. Guests could also dine in the garden, which was especially pleasant during good weather. Another feature I really appreciated was the cozy lounge area with a large selection of books, a chess set, board games, and comfortable armchairs for relaxing. It was a great place to unwind after a day of exploring Oslo and added to the hotel's welcoming and homely atmosphere.

Stay of tranquility

This historic hotel is located in the calm and welcoming Frogner neighborhood.
The property is maintained respecting its past while offering the comforts of the present.
Even though it is located outside the center, it is easily reachable by public transport or by wonderful walks.
Room 307, a single, is of a good size and is equipped with everything necessary.
The room and bathroom are clean and the shower is generously sized.
The common areas where breakfast, fika, and dinner are also offered are wonderful.
The breakfast offers a lot of variety and quality.
The dinner was very much appreciated.
Staff is helpful and always courteous.
If you want to stay in the city while having a quiet experience, this is the perfect property.

Lovely characterful hotel with a great location for Oslo and the museum sights (Fram etc). Breakfast was terrific and the room also included dinner and afternoon coffee & cake. Private parking with EV charging available.

Unbelievably relaxed yet professional atmosphere, very helpful staff and excellent breakfast.
Complimentary dinner may not hit the mark with foodies though more than adequate for the rest of us and just removes more stress when travelling on a hectic business trip in an otherwise very expensive city.

Don't stay here with children

Beware hidden charges if you stay here with children. I booked a room for two adults and one 11 year old for two nights through Booking.com. On check-in, we were informed that there is an extra charge of 350NOK per night for the child's bed. I was told that this is company policy, that the information is on the Booking.com web page, and that I was contacted about it in advance. If the information is on the web page then it's very well hidden, and I certainly wasn't contacted. From the receptionist's response when we complained, this clearly happens a lot and catches plenty of visitors out. We regularly book 2+1 rooms including a child's bed, sometimes via the same website, and have never had an extra charge like this before from any hotel. All charges should be included in the advertised price - not a hidden extra on check-in when you have nowhere else to go - so that guests can compare prices fairly. This policy is unfair on the staff too, who obviously have to put up with lots of upset customers as a result.
It's worth adding that, beyond the hidden charges, this is a good hotel. The staff were pleasant even when having to face another complaint about a familiar issue, the inclusive breakfast and dinner are good, and the room was clean and quiet. The building is in a smart district a short tram ride from the Central Station. It's a shame that the hidden charges let everything else down.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry for the inconvenience with the experience with booking through the Booking.com site.
We have taken it up with Booking.com to make it even more clear than today, where it states a few lines further down that there is an extra charge for an extra bed, and not on the line it self where you set the number of persons. Though I must point out that It is also mentioned in the policy you tick off when booking the room.
I am happy to hear that you liked the hotel otherwise with both the room, breakfast, dinner and the staff.
