Beautiful interior, on a modest island
I've seen a huge number of times on social media and top hotel rankings - the Joali Being Hotel, and I certainly wanted to get here. The picture looks really cute and Instagrammable in life, but here are a few nuances that have made a huge difference to me personally, so it's unlikely that I'll be going back to this hotel.
We spent 7 nights in January at an average cost of $3,400 per night !!!
The main drawbacks for me and perhaps for someone will also play a role.
1. Villas are neither private nor secluded. They are literally a couple of meters apart. We listened to the neighbors fight and their music playlist. And if you swim in the pool in the villa, then people walking on the side of the road can also admire you. Well, looking at the villa to the neighbors is not a problem either - there are windows on the sides, the fence is not high.
2. The beach is 50% sand, but breakwaters. They're literally everywhere. Beautiful photos with white sand traditional for Maldives on the horizon are not possible. Upon arrival near the dock you will be met by a beach with broken corals. And near the diving center will just be piled sandbags to strengthen the shore. I thought that only happened in three or four star hotels. I'll talk about snorkeling later.
3. Not a transparent NV feeding system. We had dinners included, where we had to either deduct 3 meals each or a $260 credit for two. BUT THEY BRING IN A $500-$600 CHECK AT DINNER THAT YOU NEED TO SIGN, AND THEN THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT AT NIGHT DEDUCTS WHATEVER IT SEES FIT TO DEDUCT. So when you sign a check, you don't know how much you're gonna have to pay in the end. The reason I resented this system the most was because we were in two other hotels on the same trip with dinner included. In one, the food was simply not included in the bill, but only the drinks and consequently only the tax on them, in the other, a full check was brought, but it further transparently took away what should be deducted and consequently taxes were again paid only for what you actually pay. But apparently this luxury resort was so unprofitable to do, so I ate - please pay the tax. Let's not forget that prices in Maldives are tax free and taxes are almost 30%. So all our credit went to pay our own taxes :) but it's okay, people who pay $4k a night and dinner is not difficult to pay.
4. Very poor service at the pool restaurant. I know it's hot, but when waiters always prefer to hide in the shadows, and to ask for something you have to go and find them yourself. Carry this for you for another 10 or 15 minutes. Even if it's just a menu. One day, I told a staff member that it was uncomfortable and they needed to do the waiter buttons that all good beaches have. He shook his head, but nothing changed the next day. The dirty plates in the afternoon were next to our deck chairs for two hours until we went home.
5. About Butler. We had Butler Arthur in general he did almost everything we asked. Almost - because some requests, I had to remind you. But for me at a luxury resort, there's a big difference from Butler as your personal administrator to Butler doing a little more than he's asked to do and a little bit more anticipating and surprising. That wasn't enough. A trivial example. 7:30 a.m. flight, no breakfast. I'm asking if I can have an almond croissant with me. He says yes, of course. We get in the bugs and get on the plane, he says - the almond croissants weren't cooked today so without them. And we're hungry and a little sad leaving the island. But just a second. If there are no almonds, you can bring chocolate, strawberry, collect a basket of all the buns that are at breakfast, but do not let the guest go upset. That's how high resort service differs from normal service. And that's after we tipped pretty well. We were promised nameplates from the bikes, but of course we forgot. Little things, but little things make hospitality.
6. Well, my favorite is snorkeling or being ignored by five people on the staff when I needed help. We were unlucky and all the days we were on the home reef there were big waves, one day we braved, but there were very many jellyfish and a strong current that could not swim against. Second day again - big waves, poor visibility. There were waves on the last day, too, but I decided I definitely wouldn't leave here without seeing the reef. Going to the diving center. They think the best reef is near a Japanese restaurant. This is about 100 meters away. And it's the current from there that won't have to swim against him. All the staff at the diving centre knew I was going snorkelling there, Butler drove me, dropped me off and drove off. The staff is gone, the phones are gone. No one even thought that one girl should be helped down the slippery and rather high staircase upholstered in the waves, serve her snorkels to make her comfortable and safe. But no, I was overcoming all the challenges on my own. The most interesting thing started when, literally a minute later, my mask ripped in the water. Literally breaking the fastening for the elastic band in the mask I was given and washed in the diving center. Of course, I'm climbing out again alone down slippery stairs with my snorkels on the edge and a torn mask. I wave to the diving staff at the center, they see me, they look at me, but they don't understand what I want from them, pointing at my mask, and they go about their business. No phone. I have to walk back to the diving centre, Butler drives past me 20 metres away and he's not bothered that only two minutes ago he dropped me off for a snorkel. When asked why this happened, he says, I thought you were just walking. When I asked the manager of the diving center why no one helped me, he said, "Sorry, but I've only been here for the first week. I'm not used to giving up, and after all, taking a new mask, Butler, and a staff member, the diving center went to try its destiny again. I saw a turtle, 3 eagle rays, anemones, 2 murens, an octopus, but the reef is not alive. Corals are pretty scarce.
From the good:
1. The spa is really luxurious. But be prepared to leave at least $400 for the simplest massage.
2. Every day they replenished the fruit basket in the room, cleaned well,
3. The biggest gym in the Maldives, but honestly, the sporty atmosphere is not felt at the resort.
4. You can go to the Joali Hotel. 15 minutes on the boat and you're there to see their infrastructure, have lunch. But the problem is, one flight a day - the boat leaves at 11 and returns at 15. That is, at the very least you are on a foreign island, in open space without the possibility of hiding somewhere cool. We prefer to spend this most dangerous time in the spa or in the villa, our question if it is possible to go later, said yes, but pay $800 and a private boat will take you anytime.
5. Food is good in restaurants, especially since their emphasis is on healthy and healthy dishes. Just don't take ceviche from sibas for dinner on the beach. It's not thin slyes, it's chopped like tar tar, and bitter. The octopus was rubbery once, but well done, redone.
6. Of the employees liked the girl from Kazakhstan administrator at the spa, she works with soul, the therapist at the spa Gaa from Thailand, the Russian-speaking girl at the main restaurant - she was also always kind and tried to help, advise, recommend.
7. Well, the plane they have branded good leather seats almost like in a business jet.
8. Conveniently, you can take a bottle of wine, not drink it at dinner and they'll send it to your villa or save it for the next dinner.
My conclusion, as I have experience and insight in different hotels in the Maldives and other good hotels around the world, is that price-quality is not in line. Yes, beautiful interiors, but not enough to make a guest want to come back. It is also not enough to serve him always a wet towel and smile, but without making the guest really not strain for anything and relax and rest.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed account of your recent stay at JOALI BEING. I truly appreciate the openness of your feedback and regret that your experience did not fully align with the standard that the vast majority of our guests enjoy.
I am pleased to know that the design and aesthetic of the island resonated with you. At the same time, I am sincerely sorry to read of the areas that fell short of your expectations. We fully recognise how precious time away is, and it is a matter of genuine concern to us whenever we do not deliver the seamless and uplifting experience our guests deserve.
JOALI BEING is a natural island retreat, and certain seasonal coastal protection measures in a confined area, including limited shoreline reinforcement, are essential to preserving the integrity of the island environment. That said, we understand how this may differ from individual expectations, and your observations are valuable as we continue to refine how these measures are managed.
It is with particular regret to learn that aspects of service, where greater anticipation could have elevated your stay, did not meet the level we aspire to. These details are fundamental to luxury hospitality, and your feedback has been shared directly with the relevant teams for focused coaching and improvement.
Please rest assured that your comments are taken seriously and contribute meaningfully to our ongoing refinement of service standards. We do hope that, in time, you may consider returning and allow us the opportunity to welcome you back to our island of well-living and deliver the true JOALI BEING experience our guests have come to know and love.
Should you wish to discuss your experience further, my team and I would be pleased to connect with you directly.
Thank you once again for sharing your perspective.
Warm regards,
Graeme Freeman
