Perfect start and end to a Kenya Holiday

Located behind high walls in the Karen District of Nairobi lies this hidden gem.I’m not entirely sure why international flights arrive and depart at such wicked hours, but Hotel Rudi was welcoming and accommodating to my whacky arrival and departure times at JKIA. I stayed here when I arrived in Kenya, and then again two weeks later prior to departure.
My arrival in Kenya – my first visit – at 2am. I’m American and was coming from a working holiday in Somaliland, and although it’s a short flight via Addis Ababa, I still arrived in the middle of the night. Yet the staff at Hotel Rudi was there to welcome me and ensured I settled in. My room was lovely, quiet and clean, and yes, I fell asleep the second my head hit the pillow. The next morning, sitting in the quiet peaceful garden area, I had a lovely breakfast to order. And my first cup of Kenyan coffee – oh my!! What an introduction to my future home! The coffee was delicious, as was my light breakfast. I also experienced my first introduction to Kenyan mangos and I was immediately hooked (sorry India, Kenya beats your mangos by 1000 kilometres!).
After spending the day running errands, I returned to the Hotel Rudi in time for an early dinner sitting in the garden again, and enjoyed a lovely vegetable curry for dinner. I fell asleep listening to the neighbor dog keeping the area safe from intruders. The next morning breakfast wasn’t quite as peaceful and I’m glad I was able to enjoy the buffet before a large tour group joined from nearby. The buffet, with eggs made to order, was just as delicious as the day before, and I managed to snag the last slices of mango. Fortified with that delicious coffee again, I set off to explore the Fairview Coffee Plantation, the Nairobi National Museum, and the Snake Park. I returned to the Hotel early enough so I could spend some time working downstairs in my comfortable “office” and later decided to request just a light salad for dinner which I enjoyed in my room. The next morning, I checked out early, with a delicious, bagged breakfast in hand, and headed north.
On my return, two weeks later, I was greeted like a long-lost friend. I arrived about 2pm, and although I had missed lunch, Chef willingly created another lovely salad for me (including my favourite, avocado). I was able to nap, shower, repack… and truly wished I could stay longer. I checked out at 8pm but promised I would be back soon. Hotel Rudi will definitely be my start and end for every visit to Kenya (especially if my flights continue to arrive and depart in the middle of the night!).
So many lovely touches – the warm welcome with juice upon arrival, the meticulous floral decorations on the bed and in the bathroom, the service, the food – I felt like I was their most important guest. And maybe, for that day, I was. I especially want to thank Maitai for helping me correct my SIM issue (note to self, do not reboot your phone to install an update when you can’t remember your SIM passcode), and for laughing with me when I realized that this security geek really messed that one up. Kudos to the Chef for accommodating my special requests. And special thanks to the rest of the staff.
I feel as if I was among family at Hotel Rudi, and can’t wait to visit again. Hotel Rudi will be my Nairobi home-away-from-home. Asante sana to everyone. Thank you so much.

Great location with renovation potential

We had very nice and helpful contact with Heike in advance of booking, as we also booked the transfer from the airport and a day trip (perfectly and as desired organized) here. The Hotel Rudi is quietly and safely located in the green Karen neighborhood, we could be on foot during the day (Uber and Bolt are available at any time though). This is a villa district, the guard is also taken care of by dogs, of course they can bark at any time, but we did not mind. The distance to Wilson Airport is optimal, no noise pollution, but quickly accessible.
Our first room had a connecting door to another room, so that we were unfortunately allowed to listen to the snoring of the guest staying there throughout the first night. After a change of room, this had been taken care of, with a certain clairvoyance about the centrally located stairwell and wooden doors to be expected throughout the house. Both rooms were spotlessly clean, with tiled floors and simply furnished. What really should be renewed are the bathrooms that have suffered simply because of age and humidity.
For breakfast and dinner (small menu to choose from at breakfast/daytime) you sit comfortably on a terrace overlooking the garden. Everything was freshly prepared and lovingly presented. The staff are very attentive and incredibly friendly, we felt well looked after and comfortable.

Small, pretty hotel, ideal location in between airport and safaris

It is a small hotel with a beautiful garden to relax. It's a little oasis in a practical location before/after a flight and to head out on a safari. The rooms are very spacious and the staff very friendly and forthcoming.
