Fantastic friendly hotel / B&B in Lough Gowna, Cavan
I have been staying in hotels & B&Bs for the last 50 years & have never given anywhere a 10 but I will now. This is a gem of a hotel / B&B. It's located in Lough Gowna ( on the shores of the similarly named lake ) about 20 minutes from Cavan town. My wife & I were traveling to an event outside Cavan & booked Fitzpatricks Tavern & Hotel so we could be nearby the following morning. The service was excellent from the get-go. Our bags were taken from us & up the stairs to our room ( Room 6 was quiet & roomy ). We were given directions to Cavan ...."ignore the sign post below which is facing the wrong direction"...brilliant !! We unpacked & down to the bar for an excellent scampi each which was accompanied by 3 lovely tasty salads & chips. We both wanted to see the Limerick vs Galway hurling match & wondering how this would work out as we were in Cavan which not known for its hurling. This was no problem even though the bar was packed. The lady behind the bar turned over to TG4 on the biggest screen & we were set for the next hour. We found out from a person who lives locally that this area is a big tourist spot for fishing.....lots of visitors from the UK & beyond. We retired to bed & asleep quickly. Down for the breakfast in the morning to "you'll have the full Irish" ! We noticed there were lots of jams ( raspberry/ strawberry ) but no marmalade....a must-have for the toast. We asked for some & were told they didn't have any but..... & this is what gets the hotel from a 9.5 to a 10.....one of the staff left the room & arrived back with a jar of marmalade which he bought in the nearby shop. How can you beat that ??? We checked out & packed our bags into the car in the nearby car-park & off to Cavan. We'll be back with our fishing rods next time !

Sorry but it is a no
Electrics seemed to be faulty. Smoke alarm constantly chirping and lights flickering. Brought to their attention on first day and even messaged them but no reply and issue still there when we left. One of our bed springs were completely broken and said to lady but she said they had no spare mattresses and just told us to swap it round from one of the single mattresses on the double bed ourselves. Not really good service. A lot of broken things in room like door chain, shower handles, lamp and stand up fan.
There is a good size car park behind property to park however it was full of really large potholes.
The room was spacious and had tea and coffee facilities and a TV in room. The shower was good and powerful. The food was really good but a lot of noisy drunken people in bar BOTH NIGHTS and spoiled atmosphere and was hard to hear ourselves talk. When trying to get served at bar I waited about ten mins and walked around to find the bar maid sitting in a room vaping. I asked was she on her break and she said no.... Overall I didn't have massive expectations and only wanted basics as it is only 2 star but still feel like it fell short. With a few tweaks this place could be so much better though. My daughter who is 7 said she was glad to leave the accommodation and she has never said that ever about anywhere she has stayed before.

Stay somewhere else…
The pub has a good vibe and the staff are really helpful and polite, they couldn’t do enough for us. The hotel though is really quite dirty. The carpet leading into the hotel is visibly filthy and the carpet in the room we stayed in was stained as well. I think the room had been cleaned but not very well…the taps in the bathroom weren’t clean. There was a weird smell also. The decor is tired and the furniture old. There was a lot of noise after 11pm with doors banging downstairs (I think) and bottles being disposed of in the yard below our room window. I wouldn’t pay half what we did to stay here, I would stay somewhere else. The 2 stars are for the staff, the hotel gets 0.

A great business trip accomodation option
A friendly place to stay during a business trip. Fine food, and a cracking breakfast to set you up for a day on the road. Basic, clean and comfy rooms. A good pint of course and a pleasant location to wander round and explore. I liked the Collie who came to greet me in the car park in the morning when he was doing his rounds of the village. Thankyou
