Great location and upscale hotel in the City
We lived in the city for over a decade before leaving a few years ago. We come back quite a bit, usually as a day trip but we wanted to stay overnight so we stayed here and were really pleased. Staff was professional and friendly. Service was good. Room was upgraded and had a stunning view over the city. The location is very good IMO. Walking to Union Square shopping involves a very steep descent and incline back so unless you’re used to that, you might want to take an Uber/Lyft. We are used to walking around the city and it was fine. Safe to walk. Only had bfast in the hotel and they were out of the fresh croissants so can’t comment though the yogurt w/ house made granola was good. The reason I docked them 1 star is my app showed the resort/city fee included a few things, including one beverage from the mini bar (dollar limit). That’s the only reason we took a sparkling water from there. Upon checkout, was told I owed that $8 or whatever it was from the mini bar and they did charge me. Frustrating.

Great location and history, amazing views from the upper floors
I stayed here for 5 nights in January 2026 and I found this hotel generally excellent. The room was a little dated however the extremely spacious size meant that it was still very clean and comfortable, I had a suite on the top floor and the views were exceptional. There was very little outside noise at this level too which was great. The history of the hotel is so intersting and it is seen throughout the hotel, it is worthwhile taking the time to look at the pictures on the wall and explore the hotel to understand the history. The lobby and bar/restaurant are very grand which is nice. The only criticism I had was that there were a couple of large conferences on whilst I was there and at times that meant the restaurant and bar were completely overwhelmed and service was slow. Also room service breakfast one morning took far too long to arrive again due to the same reason. Location wise this hotel is up a hill but excellently located to get off the cable car so don't be put off by it being up a hill as you can easily reach it without walking. Overall I'd definitely recommend this hotel and I would absolutely return.

Staff, bar, restaurant, and lobby are wonderful. Everyone was extremely helpful and accommodating. Food is overpriced especially with the added gratuity, hotel fee, and admin fee for in-room dining. Parking at 90 per night is outrageous. Also not sure what the “resort fee” is for, there’s no pool or similar amenities; this is not a resort. Our room smelled of cigarette smoke and rug had lots of stains, probably the original from 60 years ago. I’ll try other spots before coming back here.

Staff was friendly, very accommodating and were a pleasant experience to deal with. Room was immaculate and the shower products are top tier. Appreciate them for being flexible with late check out too!

The worst 5-star hotel I have ever stayed at.
During a two-night stay, we had to change rooms two times. For nearly $1,000 per two nights, the room had no bottled water or bathrobes, no mini bar, and the bedding was shockingly poor quality. My daughter was bitten in bed (it was the reason why we changed the room late night at the first day of staying).
After the moving the “upgraded” room only had a better view—the bathroom was old and the sink was clogged - that’s why we asked to change this room to the same category as I booked.
There was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience from management. Standard check-out was at 11:00 AM, and only after I explained how disappointing our stay had been and mentioned that no one had even apologized was I offered a late check-out until 2:00 PM, which I genuinely appreciated. The staff was polite, but the service and room quality were nowhere near 5-star standards.
