Good value for money old style hotel.

Good location , value for money old style hotel.
This was my third hotel in Tallinn and the best pick of the three. It is an older property with some quirky aspects to it. But I don’t mind that . In fact it adds to the charm . The location is the best in the middle of the old town , so walking distance to everything of interest . A very good restaurant over the road La Margarita , which serves better pizzas than in Italy. I stayed on the ground floor in a room with ample space and a bathroom with a heated floor , which is a novelty to me , but it was chilly at night , so a good feature of the room. I enjoyed having a kettle in the room , so late evening & early morning I could make a cup of tea for myself. The breakfast was in the main part of the building on the first floor served buffet style . They have all the dishes locals enjoy for breakfast including herrings and beetroot salad along with all the usual dishes one would expect. The breakfast is included in the room rate so that is a bonus. The staff are reserved on first meeting , but are very helpful and kind when they know you better.
I would stay again as its good for a longer stay and good value for money. It is not 5* , but comfortable.

You get what you pay for. No elevator, we stayed on the fourth floor. Narrow, cramped stairs that we dragged our bags up. Not for people with mobility issues. Far from parking. But the location was good in the old town.

Acceptable Stay

Stayed four nights at this hotel from 27th to 30th December 2025. Set in the Old Town of Tallinn in a great location. This hotel has an Estonian charm to it, traditional, quirky and historic with bags of character. It also has an olde, worlde kind of vibe to it.
We were given a room with two single beds on the ground floor with an en-suite bathroom, full size wardrobe and TV. Room was spacious, clean and warm; however, it wasn't very well lit. Had one lamp on a bedside table with an extension cable hanging off the headboard. There were fresh towels in the bathroom, however no spare pillows or bedding in the room. There was a fridge in the room but no kettle for tea or coffee. The hair dryer in the room wasn't working and there was WIFI available. The room was also quiet considering how near the main entrance it was. Housekeeping service happened whilst we were there, towels were changed and beds made daily.
Breakfast, was, however inadequate, far too many guests crammed into a small dining hall. You couldn't turn round without nearly falling over somebody. Food and supplies weren't replenished in time and there was only one or two staff on clearing tables. Poor choice of hot food offering and it was quite an intimate affair sharing tables with other guests. I didn't go down for breakfast for the last two mornings we were there as I couldn't face it. My advice would be to get up super early when it’s maybe quieter or just avoid it altogether.
Don't be under the illusion either that it is a modern hotel due to how old the building is. This is reflected in the lack of lifts so be prepared if you do have heavy bags/suitcases to carry them upstairs. It would also be no good for people with mobility issues due to lots of stairwells and narrow corridors. There were lots of tourists using the hotel during this time, some of whom were not quiet when entering and exiting rooms. There was always someone sitting on the reception desk both day and night and there was a coffee machine in the entrance. Apart from the poor breakfast offering, we did have a pleasant stay, and I would recommend this hotel as somewhere to stay.

Travel with an open mind

Hotel is located centrally in old town, ideal for exploring, its a quaint old building with charm but no lift so totally inaccessible for disabled or elderly ,over 5 floors ,and no one at reception will help with luggage ,
Breakfast was basic for a european city i expected crosssints and orange juice but no poor display with diluted juice ,
Reception staff need retraining on customer service and hospitality ,except for one young lad who was helpful ,lady with blonde hair was rude ,unhelpful and actually tutted at my sister when she asked her something, clearly had no people skills
Not helpful in trying to promote tourism
Room was clean and spacious ,But staff at reception set a very bad tone with their unwillingness to engage with customers
Would not even greet guests with a good morning ? Basic hospitality manners were non existent

Disappointing Reception at the Olav Hotel

My sister and I stayed 4 nights at this hotel. We both found 2 out of 3 of the reception staff very rude. When I forgot my room key -as I sat up reading in the reading corner- I asked the male night shift receptionist to issue me a new swipe card to avoid waking my sister- he was snarly despite the task taking 2 minutes.
Then on our day of departure my sister and I asked if we could place our luggage in the luggage room as we had an evening flight and the female receptionist huffed and dragged herself around the desk to show us the luggage room which was 10 feet away.
We found the staff attitude quite hostile tbh. No good mornings nothing.
While I understand we Irish are very open and chatty and other nationalities can be more reserved and contained we found the staff at this hotel to be austere, rude brinking on hostile.
We're 2 middle aged well travelled sisters that were in bed at 10 every night so we definitely weren't difficult party guests.
Strange for staff to be so unwelcoming in the heart of the Oldtown of Tallinn working in the hospitality industry.
