The perfect hotel with stunning views

Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would happily return.
The hotel itself is stunning. The location and views are excellent, with the front of the hotel overlooking the mountains and the rear overlooking the promenade and sea. The whole property was beautifully presented and made a great first impression.
The food in the main buffet restaurant was particularly impressive. For an all-inclusive hotel, the quality and variety were extremely good, with plenty of choice throughout our stay. The KOI Asian restaurant was closed while we were there, and although we didn't visit the Mexican restaurant, the standard of the main buffet was so good that I wouldn't expect the other restaurants to disappoint.
There was also a good range of activities taking place throughout the day, catering for a variety of ages and interests. Importantly, these never felt too intrusive or "in your face", which fitted the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel really well.
The staff were consistently friendly, polite and helpful, and we had a very positive experience with everyone we encountered.
If I had to identify one area for improvement, it would be the evening entertainment arena. The venue is located one level below the main restaurant and is covered by a stretch canopy. Unfortunately, because the area gets very warm during the day and there is very little ventilation or airflow in the evening, it became extremely hot and stuffy. It was difficult to sit there comfortably for an extended period. Improving ventilation or airflow in this area would make a significant difference to the evening experience.
The location of the hotel is also excellent. There are shops, bars and restaurants along the promenade directly outside the hotel, and Rubicón Marina is only around a five-minute walk away, offering a great selection of restaurants, bars and shops as well as a small shopping mall. Walking in the opposite direction along the promenade takes you towards the centre of Playa Blanca and the port, where there are even more restaurants and shops.
One minor point regarding the all-inclusive offering was that the selection of alcoholic beers and spirits was somewhat limited, and it would also be good to see alcohol-free spirits included as part of the all-inclusive drinks selection.
Overall, though, these are relatively minor points. We genuinely enjoyed our stay, thought the hotel was excellent, and would happily come back again in the future. We would also have no hesitation in recommending Barceló Playa Blanca to others.

Two night family stay

Room was pleasantly bigger than I expected and the beds very comfortable. Being new it’s nice but it will need looking after as cracks (literally) are beginning to show.
Be aware that it’s the sort of clientele that queue at the gates half an hour before the pool is unlocked to grab their sun loungers and at 11:30am there were none left so we found some astroturf to lie on with empty loungers with towels on around us.

Premium Price, but a Very Disappointing Experience – Serious Concerns Around Food Safety

We have just returned from a 14-night family holiday at the Barceló Playa Blanca and, unfortunately, despite there being some positives, I cannot recommend this hotel based on our experience.
We paid a significant amount of money for a family of four to stay here, and at this price point I think it is reasonable to expect four proper, comfortable beds. Instead, our room consisted of two beds and a pull-out sofa bed, which meant spending two weeks sleeping on a sofa bed. For a premium-priced family holiday, I simply don’t think this is acceptable. A sofa bed may be reasonable for an occasional night, but it should not be considered an appropriate sleeping arrangement for a two-week family holiday at this price.
The biggest disappointment, however, was the food and, more seriously, our experience with food safety.
The main restaurant is extremely busy and the chefs on the grill are cooking large volumes of meat to order. On three separate occasions we were served meat that was significantly undercooked or raw.
The first was steak. The steaks appeared to be going onto the flat-top grill while still frozen. Ours looked cooked on the outside but when cut into, the centre had an unpleasant, almost jelly-like texture and was clearly not properly cooked through.
The second occasion involved turkey, which was still pink and undercooked in the centre.
Most concerning of all was pork that was served raw in the middle to our nine-year-old child. He thought it was steak and therefore assumed it was safe to eat. Thankfully he did not become ill, but discovering that a child had been served raw pork was extremely worrying. Once might be an unfortunate mistake; experiencing problems with undercooked meat on three separate occasions during one holiday suggests, in my opinion, that something within the cooking process needs reviewing.
There were also significant concerns regarding coeliac disease and gluten-free food preparation.
My mother-in-law, who travelled with us, is coeliac. Although the hotel did make some arrangements for her, throughout the 14 days there seemed to be a worrying inconsistency in staff knowledge. Different members of staff gave conflicting advice about what she could and could not eat, including being told on occasions that foods were suitable when they contained gluten.
We also found some of the labelling in the buffet area unreliable, which makes it extremely difficult for somebody with coeliac disease to have confidence in what they are eating.
One particularly obvious example was the toaster intended for gluten-free bread at breakfast. Despite apparently being designated as gluten-free, we regularly saw guests using it to toast normal bread. This completely defeats the purpose because of cross-contamination. In my opinion, something like this should be kept behind the counter and gluten-free toast prepared on request using dedicated equipment. For somebody with coeliac disease, gluten-free food is not a lifestyle preference – avoiding cross-contamination is a genuine medical necessity.
There are positives. The hotel itself is modern, attractive and was generally very clean. Considering the sheer number of guests staying there, the hotel also seemed to cope reasonably well in many of the communal areas, and many members of staff were friendly and hardworking.
However, those positives cannot outweigh our experience.
At a lower price point, I might have been more forgiving about some of the accommodation and overcrowding issues. But when you are paying a premium price for a two-week family holiday, I expect comfortable sleeping arrangements, consistently good food and, above everything else, confidence that the food being served is safe.
Being served raw or significantly undercooked meat three times, including raw pork to a nine-year-old child, combined with what we witnessed regarding gluten-free food handling, means I simply cannot recommend Barceló Playa Blanca to other families based on our experience.
It is a shame, because the hotel has the facilities and appearance to be an excellent resort. However, in our case, some fairly fundamental issues turned what should have been a premium family holiday into a very disappointing experience.

Not a 4star hotel but a 3 at best

You get to reception and staff are very friendly, that’s when the problem starts we had booked 2 rooms 1 for myself and hubby then another for my daughter and family (4 people) then we get told that one of the children has to stay with us .Then we go to the room and it’s a great view so settled until we come back to the room and there’s insects we inform reception and it takes two days until a cleaner comes and sprays them but they r back the next day .Again we tell reception 3 times in our 11 day stay .Nothing was done really to help ,food wise it’s not great hit and miss I had steak twice and both times it’s raw blood red raw told the manager and his reaction was oh well .
We have stayed at Barcelona 4 times (different locations) and this one is the worse one ever .Pools are great entertainment is reparative.
We haven’t even had a sorry from Barcelo .To say this hotel is only a couple yrs old in parts it needs sorting ie mild in the shower as to be honest the cleaners don’t clean properly. Needless to say we won’t be going to this hotel again in fact it may even put us off staying at a Barcelo hotel again .
