Great spot in the heart of town near the beaches and restaurants
We had an awesome stay at the Funky Monkey Lodge! After processing the fact that we didn't have a room with A/C (our mistake not the Funky Monkey's mistake), we 100% enjoyed our stay. The Lodge is beautiful, the staff is amazing and very accomodating (Guido showed us an available room with A/C, but we really liked the "tree house" room so didn't change) and the breakfast was outstanding. The grounds of the Lodge are beautiful and it was fun listening to the howler monkeys in the morning. We also saw Capuchin Monkey's with a baby playing in the trees at the Lodge as well. We did not find the time to use the pool, but it is really a beautiful retreat spot to enjoy and relax if you can. The room was large, very clean and having the outside deck area was a hudge positive as we ejoyed sitting on the deck in the morning. We were able to easily walk to the main street in Santa Teresa and felt very safe doing so at night. The Lodge is exactly as pictured on their website. I would definitely stay here again.

Funky Monkey Lodge — A Gem in Santa Teresa ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you're looking for the perfect base camp for a Santa Teresa surf trip, look no further than Funky Monkey Lodge. I stayed in the Lower Treetop Apartment and left genuinely impressed on every front.
The Room & Property
The room is clean, comfortable, and surprisingly quiet. The stairs up to the apartment are no big deal, and once you're settled on your balcony with a view of the jungle and ocean stretching out in front of you, you'll forget all about it. That balcony alone is worth the stay.
Location
Unbeatable. A short walk gets you to local sodas, tourist restaurants, a pharmacy, and a grocery store — everything you actually need. The beach is just minutes away, and you can rent a board right on the sand. Around the corner you'll find Bodykult (excellent and challenging pilates classes) and Don Juan's surf/yoga hostel offering multiple yoga styles throughout the day — hatha, vinyasa, yin. The lodge itself offers yoga three mornings a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 8am) if your schedule allows.
Breakfast
Genuinely delicious. Get the gallo pinto and the banana pancakes — and ask for the syrup on the side. The coffee is divine, though to be fair, that's true everywhere in Costa Rica.
Surfing with Nacho
This was a highlight of my entire trip. I've taken surf lessons at probably six different schools over the years, and Nacho stands out. He teaches you to read the waves and position yourself to actually catch them — not just stand up on white water. I did two private sessions, each about two hours at sunset. The scenery was a dream and the water was warm. First session I caught 12 waves, second session 16. Real improvement. Private lessons were $115, paid directly to Nacho in cash — absolutely worth every colón.
ATV Rental
I rented an ATV for the day ($90) and it was one of the most fun things I've done on a trip. The rental guy dropped it off right at Funky Monkey, mapped out a scenic route on Google Maps, and gave great recommendations for spots to stop and eat. The beaches I stumbled upon were stunning — white sand, virtually no one around. Pro tip: bring a phone mount so you can follow the map hands-free while riding.
Santa Teresa is magic, and Funky Monkey Lodge made it even better. Highly recommend.

A zen vibe in a fun and bustling area
We stayed at the funky monkey as a couple for 6 days. This was our favourite stop in Costa Rica! We highly recommend it! From the amazing and kind staff, to the lush plants, gorgeous pool and adorable cabins - everything was perfect .
The lodge is secluded from the road, so much quieter than most spots in Santa Teresa, but an easy walk to the beach and restaurants (up a small hill). We stayed in cabin #3 and it was perfect - AC worked great, a lovely deck with hammock and chairs, equipped kitchen with coffee, and outdoor (but private) shower with hot water and good water pressure. Breakfast was included each morning and you could pick from a varied cooked menu plus nice fresh fruit and coffee - delicious. This got us ready for a day of adventure surfing or ATVing the coast . There is yoga offered daily onsite as well. Staff were super helpful to book activities and shuttles to help us get around . Can’t recommend this place enough - we will be back !!

Awesome
Stayed 7 nights via great Bodyboarding Holidays trip.
Funky Monkey was fantastic - really nice rooms, very clean, hardest-working staff — and nicest — you find anywhere, especially Guido (his singing is suspect but his margaritas are amazing). Great location also and they have lots of ideas/access for fun local trips.

Close to nature and stylish
We really liked the Mood at the lodge! Everything was tastefully decorated and looked very harmonious! The direct proximity to nature had its special appeal, so that sitting on the terrace alone was exciting! You could hear howler monkeys (even see them later!), observe various birds and at night we experienced a violent thunderstorm - that was a little thrill right away!
Breakfast on the beautiful terrace of the main building tasted good and was freshly prepared according to order.
Since we travelled in the low season, we even had the wonderfully landscaped hotel pool all to ourselves!
All in all, we can only recommend the lodge with its friendly operators
