Beautiful hotel and the owner is a very intelligent beautiful gorgeous lady who knows the history of the royal hotel to a tee

An unpleasant stay in an interesting hotel.

I will try not to repeat a lot of what quite a number of reviewers have already posted in relation to the owner of this hotel, and I will try to be detached and as impersonal as I can but that may be difficult. I stayed at The Royal Hotel for four nights in July this year. I knew something was different when, on arrival, I couldn't gain entry with my assigned keypad PIN to check in and gestured towards the lady on the other side of the door - who I subsequently discovered was Carmen, the hotel owner - for assistance. To my astonishment, she promptly turned on her heel and walked off to her quarters beside reception without a word, closing her door! The hotel itself is historically interesting, breakfast was good although when I asked for coffee I was directed to the dispensing machine in reception so I didn't bother. What should have been a relaxing and enjoyable four-day stay was stressful and unpleasant throughout, entirely due to the rude, unhelpful, and overbearing attitude of the - I will be as charitable as I can - eccentric hotel owner. I have never been as relieved to check out of anywhere. In her responses to these reviews, Carmen usually says something like 'we aim to give our customers a lovely experience'. in my case it wasn't, and she didn't.

The interior of the hotel was unique

A deposit of CAD 100 must be made and the money will be released again only after 2-4 weeks.
When you arrive at the hotel, you know that no noise is permitted in any place in the hotel, i.e. in the reception, on the stairs up to the rooms and also when you are in the room. In the reception there is a sign saying that you must move so that you cannot be heard.
You MUST change shoes when entering the hotel. Furts/clipklaps are provided. You must not walk on bare feet or socks
There is generally very quiet in the hotel and quiet relaxing music is played at the reception
The host has a small dog and a cat who travel in the common areas of the hotel
We had booked a stay with breakfast, but it meant = 1stk fruit, 1 yogurt, 1 muffin and then you could make coffee/tea yourself. If you wanted a “cooked breakfast”, it cost 50 CAD/person/meal.

A really lovely hotel!

This is a lovely hotel! The breakfast was delicious and the staff were quite accommodating, allowing me to store my bicycle in their shed overnight. The room was very comfortable. The hotel has a lot of character, enhanced by all the wonderful paintings that grace the hallways.

Old World Charm - since 1785 The Royal Hotel

A charming spot in Sydney on the Esplanade. This hotel has been in the business since 1785 and we had stayed there thirty years earlier. It was an interesting spot then and continues to be intriguing. It was a tad confusing making the book, just because I needed to change some of the details. But Carmen assured me all would be okay and so it was. The room was large, clean and welcoming. The breakfast was delicious. Carmen provided good recommendations on where to eat and what to see. The location was ideal.
