To eat around & nearby "arriving tram" :)

A fairly comfortable stay was at the "suites part" of this hostel (at about a 5-minute walk from the "main part" with their dorm rooms), and yes although just being a basic suite was one with an ensuite bathroom & toiletries (and also some "common area" outside the suites).
And located at a city-center area (right around the Macedonia Square), some nice places to eat in the vicinity are: the regular traditional restaurant just a few-minute walk to the right from the Hostel's "main door to the Square" (not open for dinner though), the Turkish restaurant across the Square and a little to the left (open late for dinner), and the small pastry shop called King's Bakery to the left from the Hostel's "main door" followed by another left by just going out of the Square slightly (good for breakfast with also seats inside). And yes, with a can't-miss "tram stop" right in the middle of the Square, kind of inconvenient though was not being able to buy tickets at the kiosk-office there, so I had to walk all the way to the big Sofia Central Station and the tram stop in front of that station to buy my tickets from that kiosk-office and board the trams at that stop (for going to the sites such as National History Museum & Boyana Church on like the outskirts of the city) although the "return tram" dropped me off right at the Macedonia Square with yes a few-minute walk back to this hostel.

Bed bugs

Hello,
We arrived on Wednesday, May 13, around 2 PM at the inn. We are staying in a room with a private shower and toilet. On the evening of Friday, May 15, I noticed small bumps on my left arm, and I thought they were mosquito bites. However, the next day, today, May 16, I noticed even more bumps on my left shoulder. They are actually bed bug bites! We immediately went to see the reception of the inn to explain to them. The receptionist called what seemed to be his superior on the phone (the conversation was in Bulgarian). At the end of the call, he explained to us that he is "surprised" since they spray every beginning of the month. Nevertheless, he added that there are many travelers (backpackers) and that this happens from time to time! There is no compensation or commercial gesture offered, and when this was asked, he told us that it was not the policy of the establishment.
In summary, we asked for help from a receptionist whose name I do not know, from whom we received no compassion or compensation.
PS: The accommodation was not clean, moreover.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Honest hostel: great value, clean beds with curtains, and respectful atmosphere

I stayed one night in April 2026 and was genuinely surprised in a good way – especially after reading some mixed reviews. I chose Hostel Mostel mainly for the price, hoping it could become my go-to hostel in Sofia for future trips. And honestly? I left very happy.
What I loved:
- Wooden bunk beds– they creak a little but don't wobble like those super thin metal ones where a sneeze feels like a hurricane. Plus, privacy curtains! At my age (not 20 anymore), that's a huge plus in a mixed dorm.
- Cleanliness – sheets, pillow, and duvet all smelled fresh. I'd seen old reviews complaining about bad smells, but they've clearly improved this.
- Shared bathrooms– the main WC and showers were kept clean throughout the day. The private bathroom inside my 8-bed dorm was a bit messier by morning (after many people used it), but that's normal since they only clean it once a day. For the price? I'm fine with it. As a woman, I was just happy I could sit down without sitting on... well, you know.
- Quiet & respectful atmosphere – everyone spoke softly, even in the mixed dorm. Mostly girls in my room, super respectful. No loud parties. I slept really well.
- Staff – super attentive, kind, and helpful. Honestly one of the best treatments I've had in Bulgaria.
- The wooden balcony – very romantic, even if the view is just a building across the street. The architecture is nice, traditional old Sofia house. No chairs (probably to keep people from making noise out there), but perfect for a quick cigarette or some fresh air.
- Inner courtyard – dirt parking lot, but somehow a peaceful bubble inside the busy Macedonia neighborhood.
- Extras – small kitchen with a dishwasher, pool table, guitar, lockers with keys (no need for your own padlock), and a cozy reception area where some digital nomads were working. Great for a week-long stay.
-Who is this for?
Travelers who value honesty, cleanliness, privacy (the curtains are a lifesaver), and a good night's sleep over fancy luxuries. This is not a party hostel. It's functional, rustic, a bit cheesy in decoration, but very cozy.
I'd stay here again without hesitation. People complaining about luxury here probably haven't traveled much or seen hostels in other countries where you pay triple for half the quality. Hostel Mostel charges exactly the fair price for what it offers. That's honesty. Big thanks to the current team – you're doing a great job.

AVOID THIS HOSTEL AT ALL COSTS

From the moment we arrived, the experience was a DISASTER. We were greeted not with warmth, but by a shockingly rude staff member who, in an almost threatening tone, told us we had exactly five minutes to check an email they’d sent. Not the kindness you expect from a hostel, just plain rudeness. Those five minutes led to our “reallocation”, not to another room, but to an annex five minutes away from the hostel itself. If the hostel was bad, this annex was something out of a horror movie. The entrance was crumbling, the stairs dangerously neglected, and the room was a disgrace. I'll let the description speak for itself. There were hairs in every single bed (a clear sign the sheets hadn’t been properly cleaned). The bathroom’s air filter looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. Even worse, the door between the bathroom and the bedroom was completely transparent. Yes, transparent! We were a group of five, forced to watch each other’s most private moments. The room had just one fan for all five of us, despite the sweltering summer heat. Sleeping was nearly impossible. The beds were old, unstable, and unsafe, with deep cracks underneath that made us feel as though they might collapse at any moment. And to crown it all, right at the entrance there was an appalling piece of racist graffiti left there for everyone to see, unaddressed and unremoved. This place is not just poorly managed. It is unsafe, unsanitary, and utterly disrespectful to its guests. This place might've had its days, many years ago. But for now, do yourself a favor: stay far, far away.

Good hostel, great employee (Julien)

Pretty good experience. The employee Julien was super cool and led an great bar crawl. We went to so many places that were invisible from the street but had amazing atmosphere inside. Thank you to him for letting me keep my luggage There while I was out for a day.
