Jungle Lodge-incredible!

Beautiful location and excellent staff helped make this stay even better than we had expected. It's definitely a drive to reach this lodge but it is highly worth it. Once you arrive, it is so peaceful and calming with all the birds and the river below. Everyone was very friendly and helpful from our drivers Roque, Francisco and Lloyd to the servers at breakfast and dinner (Kaylee and Noemi) and the bartender! Lloyd also took us on a super-cool night hike around the property. Victor is great at helping set-up tours and excursions.
The food is fantastic. Most of it is grown or produced at the lodge.
We stayed in cabin 16 with a river view. The fans helped keep it cool but it is humid and a lot of stairs to the cabin and up to the main pavilion.
We enjoyed the spring-fed pool which was very refreshing.
Our family had a wonderful 4 night stay and hope to be back!

Great jungle adventure before heading to the cayes

I should give a 5 star review but nothing is perfect. My wife and our grown daughter stayed 3 nights at this wonderful place in the middle of nowhere Belize. First off don’t bother renting a car they have a shuttle service driven by one of their guides so the long trip from the airport is much more interesting and no getting turned around.
Be prepared for heat! If you live cool climate like we do in the Pacific Northwest the heat is always bit of a shock. We stayed in one of their secluded many cabins with a view of the jungle mountain side and constant sound of the rushing river below. These cabins are nicely done with AC and bottled albeit warm water. HOT TIP: Get a travel bidet… they are on a delicate septic system so they don’t tolerate ANY toilet paper down the commode .. the bidet makes it a much less disgusting experience.
The cabins are connected to the central dining area via cement paths with plenty of stairs. This place is not for the mobility challenged. The dining hall so to speak has a cool overlook of the river and is open air. The food was quite good with good portion sizes. It’s the only game for many miles so it’s nice that they have put a lot of work into making the food and service good. All the staff are local to the region and always friendly like most Belizians. I usually went with whatever the Belizian option was for each meal.. versus more Americanized options. The only complaint I had about the dining was due to a large group of Yoga travelers that would descend on the place all at once every meal and create a huge racket… probably not typical of most stays.
We hiked around the area our first day. Be warned.. we did the local Summit hike that afternoon on a whim. We are all in good physical condition but this was a butt kicker! We stupidly chose to hike it in flip flops.. bad idea. Bring lots of water and sugar for that hike. It is about a mile and almost 1100 feet.. think staircase complete with roots and other non flip flop friendly obstacles. There is a cave 3/4 of the way up.. apparently has multiple chambers but requires a belly crawl into the abyss which wasn’t for any of us.
Speaking of caves we booked the ATM cave tour through the lodge and went on it. Very worth the time and money!
We got a ride back to Belize city from Andy the same guide who picked us up.. Andy is a knowledgeable person from southern Belize and knows his way around even in sketchy Belize City. We did a detour to the Belize zoo on our way back. Nicely done zoo habitats. I would try to go to the zoo early in the morning as the heat had all the animals hunkered down.
Glad we chose this little jungle adventure to start our vacation in this wonderful country.

Beautiful place in the jungle

We enjoyed this place in the middle of the jungle of Belize. Nice rooms to stay, great food and warm staff.
We were short of eyes. A lot of life on and around the grounds of the lodge. The location on the river makes it complete.
In addition, perfect service. I left my expensive water bottle behind when I said goodbye. This was delivered the next day to our new location, which was a little over 100 km away.
In short, highly recommended!

Jungle experience if you like outdoors and birds

We visited this resort during one of the hottest months in Belize , the humidity was very high. Our rooms didn’t have air conditioning so it was uncomfortable. There was a misunderstanding with having AC rooms so we had to sleep one night without AC and it was kind of difficult during the day , but better at night. Make sure that your room has AC when making your reservation if that is what you want. They have a small and not very attractive pool, it didn’t look clean. The river is also not an option because there are crocodiles. We were expecting to see more birds around the resort, maybe it was nesting time so we didn’t see many, we also didn’t do any of the birding tours to be honest. The food is ok and fresh, but on the pricey side . The staff is great and very accommodating. If you have mobility issues this place might not be for you because of the many stairs due to the hill location. But the views are beautiful. The rooms are basic , but clean. Went to take a shower and there were no towels , why? Because they used them to make some decoration for the bed . Personally don’t appreciate them, would prefer clean towels in the bathroom, just my opinion. There is no way to communicate with front desk from the rooms, and the room two page guide didn’t provide any number or way to communicate with them. Internet is available in the rooms. No TV in the rooms either , room safe is available. Good water pressure and hot water , unlimited drinking water is available in the rooms , which for me is so important. The resort tries to don’t have single use plastic which is great :) thank you for that ! On the negative side , they have a couple of turtles that are constantly trying to escape , totally unnecessary and it goes against the eco jungle resort vibes. We spotted lots of wild agoutis and heard some howler monkeys.

Great eco-lodge in the jungle

We're a family of four (two teenage boys) and spent an incredible week in early August at Black Rock Lodge.
The last mile of the access road is pretty rough and although we never had to engage the four wheel drive of our hire car we were glad for the high ground clearance. After heavy rain I imagine a 4x4 is essential.
The location of the hotel is superb and the staff were excellent - very helpful and genuinely friendly and keen to share their love of nature and their knowledge of the jungle and Mayan culture and history. Our guide Henery who accompanied us to Caracol could not have been better.
The vista loop hike and self guided cave visit within the grounds are definitely worth doing, even though it's quite a strenuous hike and the cave was more challenging than expected, especially crawling through narrow tunnels between the chambers.
The night hike was superb, and although we were expecting to go into the jungle and not stay within the hotel grounds, we still saw loads of wildlife - mostly tarantulas and scorpions, but also frogs and snakes, which proves that the hotel is truly in the rainforest. We even had a family of armadillos right outside our cabin on a couple of nights. Swimming in the river during the day was a great way to relax for a couple of hours and at night we saw the resident crocodile in the same spot we were swimming in a few hours earlier!
The only disappointment was the food, which was both over-priced and underwhelming. We drove to nearby San Ignacio for dinner on three occasions and although the food was cheaper, we only found one good place to eat an evening meal. By far the best meal during our stay was lunch at the Saturday market in San Ignacio.
