Slow Down Hotel Bottsand has special accents.
In the small Baltic Sea town of Wendtorf near Laboe/Kiel, a special hotel opened in 2025: Slow Down Bottsand. It offers 111 studio apartments, each with a small kitchenette and a steam sauna (combined with a shower) in the room. It is less than a five-minute walk to the Baltic Sea from the hotel. In bad or cool weather, the indoor pool, which transitions into an outdoor pool, invites swimming.
I booked there in July 2026 and was assigned Comfort Double Room 238, an approximately 20 sqm room including a steam sauna and toilet. The room was equipped with a double bed (somewhat soft mattresses), a small table, two chairs, a wardrobe (with a safe), TV, luggage rack, carpet, electric fireplace, and a good curtain facing the balcony (equipped with a table and another chair; view of the parking lot). The room also includes a kitchenette with a sink, refrigerator, microwave, capsule coffee machine, cabinet, and dishes for two people.
Essentially in the middle of the room is the steam sauna, which can be individually activated and heats up quite quickly. In the walk-in sauna area, there are also two rain showers installed. Outside of that, there is a sink with a mirror and hairdryer as well as a separated toilet area. The room gave a clean and modern (maritime) impression.
On the ground floor, there is the reception, the restaurant "SunDown", the bar "SlowWave", as well as access to the pool and the spa area (for a fee). The pool makes a nice impression. It is heated and has a smaller indoor area as well as a larger outdoor area. Many loungers are located in the adjacent outdoor area, which is planted and designed like a small dune oasis. There is also a "Dune Park" with beach chairs (and beach feeling), a barefoot park, outdoor saunas, and relaxation areas. Slow Down is the name of the hotel, and it is quite possible here.
In the reception area, we were served promptly and given instructions. The hotel is dog-friendly and also offers dog paw towels and a food bowl in the entrance area. If the dog stays in the hotel, for which some rooms are equipped with suitable floors, it costs 20 euros.
The hotel has many parking spaces, which cost 10 euros per day. An estimated 40 to 50 vehicles can be parked under a covered area, where photovoltaic panels are installed above for electricity generation. This electricity can then be charged directly into electric cars at the provided charging sockets. The bicycle parking facilities also partially have electric charging options. The current electricity prices from an external company are displayed on-site.
Tip: Those who want to park for free will find available parking spaces just about 200 to 300 meters away at the Palsteg buildings (where the water sports athletes were accommodated during the Olympic competitions in Kiel). However, there are no E-charging options available…
From the hotel, you can reach a small bakery branch directly across the street in one minute. It takes 10 to 15 minutes on foot to reach the neighboring town of "Stein" with its beautiful swimming beaches. The marina Wendtorf with many boat slips is just five minutes away. An Edeka market in Wendtorf is a little over one kilometer away.

Slow Down… but just for expectations, "Die Hard" would be better here
First of all, we chose this hotel because we wanted to bridge one night between a cruise stay and a vacation home stay in the Bay of Lübeck. The hotel looked new and modern according to the website, spa and pool, not exactly cheap at 260 euros per night without breakfast, but if you want it to be nice, you have to spend money. The reviews were not quite that bad at the time; besides, we always like to see for ourselves anyway. We kept our options open for breakfast and dinner, which turned out to be a good thing.
Unfortunately, the first visual impression upon arrival was somewhat disillusioning. The parking lot still looks unfinished, the surroundings dreary and colorless. The reception was, to put it mildly… cluelessly uninformed. We were there too early and fully understand that the room was not yet ready for occupancy. It is our issue, but there are always two ways to handle this here.
Unfortunately, this hotel has the wrong strategy; we were told they had no idea when the room would be ready, but we were welcome to fill out the registration form and sign up for breakfast, since it costs an extra 5 euros the next day if we decide spontaneously. In the hope of speeding things up, the registration form was filled out, and we signed up for breakfast, unfortunately without asking about the price again, but how much could it really cost (Spoiler: Mistake) The question about potential dinner should have already made us suspicious; a proud 45 EUR per person is charged for a BBQ buffet (children are adults at the buffet), and according to the staff at the reception, there is no alternative. There is no alternative according to the staff at the reception. We gratefully declined.
After a two-hour walk, we dared to make another attempt regarding the room; same statement, period. At that time, the hotel was still obviously virtually empty, and the parking lot was about one-third full. We were told that, according to the terms and conditions, the room didn't have to be ready until 4:00 PM and that they would manage that, presumably... But they would inform us immediately when the room was ready for occupancy.
In the end, we actually waited the full 4 hours from arrival until 4:10 PM for check-in, 2 hours of which were in the hotel's own café, since the options in Wendtdorf are really limited. In the café/bar area, we were unfortunately largely ignored, politely but firmly, even though we were really willing to spend money. We did manage to order cake and drinks after an hour; that would be understandable if the café had been full, but there were only 6 other guests present besides us. One round of drinks and two pieces of apple cake in 2 hours, that was all that was possible. When we noticed at 4:00 PM that the lobby was filling up and people were being checked in, we cautiously took the liberty of asking if our room was ready and why we hadn't been informed as promised. That had apparently been overlooked, no further comment. Happy to finally be able to move into the room, the next challenge arrived immediately. After walking down the bare hallways in search of our room and opening the door, we realized: unfortunately, there was no prepared sleeping arrangement for our two children, no personal towels in the bathroom, or even bathrobes for the "spa area"—none to be found. Instead, there were peanut remnants from our predecessors on the couch, which was presumably supposed to be pulled out, and a nursing home charm in the accessible room with red emergency buttons in every corner, but such a confusing light switch concept that I could probably sooner summon an ambulance than turn off the light in the bathroom. It's a good thing we were supposed to sleep there as a family of four; that would also dampen the uncomfortable echoing. Jokes aside: As a young family without physical impairments, however, we felt extremely out of place here. I would refrain from using the term Deluxe Double Room in connection with this room, if only because of the misleading description.
So we went back down to the reception; slowly, the "first-name" concept also started to bother me a bit. I complained about the missing bed, to which I was told that a note had been missing. When I then remarked that I had expected something else after a 4-hour wait, I received a very snappy answer that they were there now and would take care of it. After checking my booking to see if it might have been my fault, it turned out that everything was transmitted correctly and also confirmed as such by the hotel. No comment, no "I'm sorry," no apology: just "we are here now and we will take care of it"... someone would be sent immediately. Maybe I'm wrong, but upon arrival at a wellness hotel, which is what the establishment claims to be, the reception should be a bit more relaxed for me as a paying guest. Unfortunately, I felt like an unwelcome petitioner here. I preferred to skip a complaint regarding the "charm" of our room, given the reaction to my request for a bed and towels for my children. It's only for one night... unfortunately, that was still not quite the end of the story...
We then headed to the "spa" area. Roughly estimated, the place has room for at least 200 people, with roughly 15 lounge chairs in the indoor pool area. Today was not untypical for Northern Germany, with some wind and coastal weather at 18 degrees, so another 40 lounge chairs in the outdoor area don't help much, especially since even the sun umbrellas had already laid themselves down voluntarily. The ambiance was more like "shortly after a storm" and not very inviting. The area where the saunas are located is similarly "generously" dimensioned and therefore absolutely unsuitable for the size of the hotel. So, unfortunately, no added value here either, and even with a lot of goodwill, no wellness concept is recognizable. Out of consideration for other guests, I am refraining from taking photos; it was not possible to take pictures in such a confined space without violating personal image rights. After 30 minutes of splashing around for the children, we retreated to the room, which we hoped was now ready.
That brought breakfast back to mind, especially since I had overheard a conversation in the lobby on the way down about outrageous prices for breakfast. They are charging 25 euros per person here (our children apparently don't count as children here, but they do for the pool...). That increases the price for the hotel, including parking, to a proud 370 euros per night if breakfast is booked. If I add dinner to that, I'm at a half-board rate that costs me 550 EUR per night without drinks, but with little service and a hospital atmosphere. By the way, upon entering the hallways, this future intended use as a rehab clinic or nursing home almost forces itself upon you, and that explicitly does not refer to the older guests.
Fortunately, the breakfast could be canceled. I am sure we will feast royally elsewhere for 100 EUR.
Had I known in advance what we were in for, this hotel would not have been considered in the slightest.
Please do not book here, not even for a stopover if there is any other option. After two years of operation, one can no longer speak of start-up difficulties here either. This is not a concept, this is poor performance for way too much money. I feel sorry for the employees; there is clearly a lack of management and training here.

Hotel great - restaurant catastrophic
We were here for four days with two children aged 6 and 9. The hotel is great. Everything is new and in good condition. The pool is also large and great for the kids. Breakfast is also fine.
In the evening we ate at the restaurant, which was a total disaster. Out of a total of seven main courses, two were "out". Then we changed our minds and took the sea bass. The fish was completely dry and was barely edible. The rest was just sloppily slapped onto the plate. That was practically cafeteria food of the lower sort. For that, we paid a total of 100 EUR with the kids, which is an absolute outrage. Small menus are fine and are trendy; but then you have to have all dishes available and not just five out of seven...

Spa hotel not suitable for children
Nice relatively new hotel that is suitable for adults but not for families with children. Unfortunately there were a lot of wild screaming children present who had no playground or children’s pool. There was nice breakfast but unfortunately dull German buffet for the evening with cooked vegetables and meat that sailed in its own fat.

New and clean hotel. A hotel with big potential ! - they (hotel OWNERS) just need to fix a few elementary issues which frustrates both personnel and guests.
Personnel overall friendly, but seems like they work under a concept not fully aligned between management, personnel and guests...
Restaurant (evening):
We managed to get a table for dinner 1 of 4 nights. Restaurant is apparently fully booked for all guests upon arrival, making a lot of guests unhappy, as other options close by are limited (unless you are okay by having dinner at 20.00-21.00).
At the restaurant, is was not even crowded, so it seems as the kitchen capacity was the issue. It was a fixed menu and the food was very fine - so a shame they could accommodate more.
Hotel restaurant also take bookings from people not staying at the hotel. Quick-fix: please stop this during high season.
Restaurant (morning):
Don't go there in rush hours (9-10) - they have tables enough if the weather is fine and you can sit outside, but the kitchen can't fill the buffet fast enough with basic food, plates, etc.
A luxury problem (not included in my overall rating): Very bad WIFI at the hotel. For long periods it didn't work at all. Isolated not a big problem, but when the 5G network in the hotel is also blocked, it was not possible to send simple messages from the room. On the balcony the signal was okay.
Perfect: rooms, beds and pool.
Overall: Wife was happy. Kids a bit disappointed by bad WIFI and limited pool hours.
Personnel overall friendly, but seems like they work under a concept not fully aligned between management, personnel and guests...

We managed to get a table for dinner 1 of 4 nights. Restaurant is apparently fully booked for all guests upon arrival, making a lot of guests unhappy, as other options close by are limited (unless you are okay by having dinner at 20.00-21.00).
