Dine like at home with mothers!
Coming after the Moselsteig stage from Bernkastel-Kues, I was welcomed very kindly by the Derkum family. Very nice room with a very nice bathroom; everything very well maintained and clean! In the St. Maternus cellar belonging to the house, I then ate Grandma Clairchen's beef roulades. The senior kept me company and immediately a warm atmosphere arose. Of course I also tasted the excellent Riesling!

Restaurant: Castle Farm Rekkem - July 2025 - Aperitifs * Mussels & steak * Dessert
We were invited by a couple of friends for dinner at the Kasteelhoeve in Rekkem (district of Menen, W-Flanders).
3 alcohol-free aperitifs (2 types) + 1 picon _vin blanc. Everyone liked the aperitifs; the picon was even more than ordinary; I think it belongs in the top-10 of our province.
Then the main dish: 2 x steak, 1 x mussels nature and 1 x mussels with white wine. I had a steak with mushroom sauce and it was perfectly saignant fried, as requested. My neighbor had a steak à point, with pepper sauce. He also found everything quite OK. The mussels were beautiful specimens, perfectly cooked. The mussels nature were very nature, with -to my taste- few vegetables. But nothing else wrong about this. The mussels with white wine, the white wine had passed far from it apparently. There was hardly any difference with the mussels nature; also very little vegetables and no (slightly) sour taste at all. If you are cutting back on white wine, which should not be allowed at the price of €32 or €33 per portion, add at least a splash of vinegar in 50cc of water. That's kind of going the same way.
Then dessert came. 2 x coupe fraise and 2 x dame blanche. Coupe fraise was pricey (€13) but was therefore abundant. 3 generous, large balls of ice cream (2 vanilla + 1 fraise) and the whole base covered with half or quartered strawberries.
At least I was really satisfied.
And I'm sure this was the same from our dinner companions.

No whines about this wine house
Our third visit was even more enjoyable than previous. The Derkum family provide comfortable, though not over large rooms. No problem for a two night stay, especially as we had the benefit of a shared balcony.
Not a large menu choice in the MaternusKellerer, but very well cooked and presented, and very reasonably priced. And the Keller is just. A series of cellars, cool from the (hopeful) hot sun which generate a real local wine-land atmosphere

Great value and charm in a small village
The Gästehaus Derkum is a small, family run establishment. They also run the restaurant in the same building and the winery of the same name. The building is old, but has been totally rebuilt so the rooms have all modern comforts.
Our room was large and being in the corner of the building had a sort of oriel window, which created a sitting area full of light and with a view over the village. A comfortable bed and total peace and quiet made our stay relaxing and enjoyable. The bathroom was large and modern. This corner room is one of two, and definitely worth asking for when you book. You should not expect the service of a large luxury hotel, but the owners were friendly and helped us in with our luggage.
On arrival, the street is quiet enough that you can stop to unload luggage. The ample free parking is located about 100 metres away. While some English is spoken, I was glad to be able to communicate with my very basic German.
If, like us, you want to travel as a local would, you will find Gästehaus Derkum to be a real find. As a bonus, you will pay a lot less for the experience.
We had a little difficulty making the booking on the internet and were not sure that we had the reservation. In the event, all went smoothly and we were glad that we had persevered.

Excellent Gastehaus in Urzig
This is a lovely guesthouse in Urzig. It is on a tiny street and we like to stay in the tower as the rooms are larger and the turret has beautiful windows with lovely flowers. It is a winery and also has an excellent restaurant in the basement. The food is very good and I love the German cooking. A continental breakfast is included in the room cost.
The rooms are spacious, immaculate and quite cozy!
