The place to stay to see the whales!

We absolutely loved our whole experience at the Blue Water Retreat! We were so well looked after by Deryck, Rob, and their team for our entire stay, which made this trip extra memorable.
The food was fantastic, and we especially loved the communal dining - sitting down together to share tales, stories, and adventures from everyone's day was a real highlight. The rooms are basic but spotlessly clean and have everything you need, plus great hot water pressure (a huge bonus!).
The main reason we went was for the whales, and it was honestly amazing and completely worth traveling all that way! On our very first afternoon, we sat on the deck and just watched whales swim right by the retreat. When we went out on the water, the boats they operate were modern, safe, and comfortable. Our guides, Ali and Iza, were fantastic and helped us experience incredible swims on both days we went out. Our skipper, Saivou, was super experienced in locating the whales and safely maneuvering the vessel.
Having a spa, sauna, and ice bath on-site was a great addition and the absolute perfect way to relax after a day on the water.
Thanks again to the whole team for having us. We can’t wait to come back with our kids when they are a bit older!

Swim with the Whales ultimate destination

We stayed at Blue water retreat in July 2026 for ‘swimming with Whales activity’.
The guide, Iza , was very supportive, caring , and knowledgeable. The support guide ,Ali ,was caring and helped us during my husband’s sea sickness and helped us to maneuver in ocean. The skipper, Saivou, was extremely focused and spotted whales accurate. The boat crew followed all rules and regulations and we swam with beautiful whales.
The onsite property staff was very supportive, kept cabins clean. We loved the vegetarian food made by Penny. He checked on our dietary needs and did excellent cooking .
The manager Deryck Tan/ Fitu, conducted a land tour for us and it was memorable. He conducted Kava ceremony which was unique.
The owner’s family was lovely .

Spearfishing and swimming with whales in Tonga

Very nice experience, comfortable rooms, crystal clear water and lots of whales. We were primarily there for Spearfishing but still got to swim with a whale. Everyone was very accomodating. Mark our guide was excellent, had an amazing knowledge of the ocean and worked extremely hard to put us on fish. Would definitely go back.

Beautiful spearfishing trip

We had an amazing week at the Blue Water Retreat. Especially Mark was an absolute legend. He guided us during a week of spearfishing, making sure everyone was comfortable and safe. The positive attitude that he had was contagious and absolutely made the trip! Also massive thanks to the rest of crew for taking care of us during our stay.

Great experience!

Had an amazing time spearfishing with Mark and stayed at the Blue Water Retreat for 4 nights. I also had some friends join me for the day and we went on a land tour with Fitu. We were in a time crunch and he still went out of his way to make it enjoyable for us.
The cooking was great, accommodations were perfect for my needs. I would highly recommend and do plan to go again.
