Excellent value, service, location and character

Perfect central location near the beautiful Westerkerk. Easy 10-15 mins walk from Centraal. Trains from Schiphol to Centraal are very easy to navigate, short 15-20mins trip, reasonably priced (€5.70) and very frequent (every 10mins early evening).
Staff are welcoming and efficient. Breakfast was delivered to the room around 8.30am as advised on check-in - croissant, bread, cheese, jam, yoghurt, coffee, orange juice and biscuit included.
Room facilities were very good for the rating/price. Comfortable (very soft) bed, much needed tower fan switched on pre-arrival, nice leafy view, flatscreen TV, shower in room and very well maintained shared toilet close by.
Steep narrow stairs may be difficult for some, but more than worth it for the overall experience of staying in such a place and only avoidable by sacrificing on location and character. It exceeded expectations and I'll be very happy to return.

Terrible except for the location.

Hotel in which you have to highly value staying based on its only strength: location. It is located very close to Anna Frank's house, Dam Square... in the very center of Amsterdam. For trying to justify the two points I have put, the staff is very amiable and the heating works great, despite the cold street, it is very, very warm.
Everything else is inconvenient. The first is accessibility, impossible to stay with the slightest problem of mobility or difficulty handling bags. There's no elevator and it's got some hellish stairs. The rooms are very small and the bathroom is dwarf. Cleanliness is not his forte, we found numerous hairs on the beds. Old furniture and small beds.
We were able to locate him, but we would not repeat in any of the cases.

Excellent location

Our stay was pleasant. The room was clean and serviced daily. A continental breakfast is served every morning to your room. This hotel is very central and walkable to everything. A tram runs past the front door. This hotel is old and basic, the 38 steps to check in is a killer with bad knees or heavy suitcases, even worse if you're on the next level. But the owner was most helpful to carry some of our luggage up and down. This appears quite normal with accommodation in Amsterdam.
My suggestion is if you have knee problems or heavy suitcases give it a miss.

Greedy owner

We reserved a room at this hotel. But circumstances turned out so bad that we couldn’t come. An unforeseen situation - my passport with visa was delayed; it was not ready. We contacted the hotel owner and asked him to cancel without penalty or just reschedule the dates. To which there was a refusal. We didn’t refuse to come, just reschedule our arrival, but he didn’t meet us. We understand that the owner is not obliged to do this. Rules are rules. But there must be some human qualities. Various force majeure circumstances happen in life, and you have to rise to the occasion. This person is too principled, greedy, and for him money comes first. We paid a fine for one day of stay. We just want to warn.... If something happens in people's lives and they cannot come on the planned dates, then all requests for cancellation or changes will be refused, no one cares about your problems. Coolness and prudence!

Fawlty Towers in Amsterdam

The stairs are ridiculously steep, two very difficult sets of stairs to negotiate and I was on the first floor. Unfortunately I was in room 6 overlooking the street with the central tram lines under my window. It was very noisy.
The owner is quite eccentric and delivers your breakfast to your room at 8:30am and wont stop knocking until you take it from him. He rang me twice after I checked in asking why I hadn't checked in.
The hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade but it is listed as 2* but I thought €126 a night was expensive.
