Castellito Kin Nah and Ángel's Canoe Tour
The canoe trip was arranged by Sandra at the Castellito Kin Nah, a small, very well kept hotel that deserves every one of it's 5 stars. The room was immaculate and really well presented. I suspect that some OCD may even be involved ;-)
Sandra contacted Ángel for me and by sheer luck, he was free to take me the next morning at 7.30am. His canoe trip through the mangroves was unforgettable, the sound of the water lapping against the canoe, birdsong, fishes jumping from the water, baby crocodiles, sunlight shining through the mangrove leaves to dapple the water with exquisite patterns, the list goes on.
Ángel and his friends have worked hard to try to restore the mangroves that have been destroyed in the past. Please, if you fancy really experiencing nature in an eco friendly manner, avoid using the motor boats which damage the mangroves due to their wake and churn up the waters for the old fashioned shrimp catchers. Instead really treat yourself to a sensual delight and take a canoe trip with Ángel or one of the other canoe guides.
I must say, however, that Ángel was an absolute star and treated me to the perfect balance of talking and silence. He had an expert knowledge of the wildlife and seemed to have the keen eye of a true lover of nature. I saw owls, eagles, kingfishers, herons, ibis, puffer fish, gold spiders (not poisonous!), humming birds, flamingoes and crocodiles (smaller than my foot and no, I don't have feet 2m long! Their mum, who is about 2m, sleeps in the day, so you'll be safe). Just the canoe trip was worth the 300 mile drive across the Yucatan peninsula...

Serenity, amidst the quaint fishing village life
I was greeted by Peter the German ex-patriot host who owns the place with his Mexican wife, and both were very helpful and welcoming.
The rooms are comfortable, and have the most amazing view over the beach, which is right on the doorstep. The beach is clean, and the pool and gardens inside the house /garden area are well maintained and clean also.
I think this is more of a stay for people without children, as people come here for the serenity partly, and the beauty, and i certainly was not disappointed. but as for facilities for kids, not so much.
The only negative thing i would say is that i didn't appreciate the two little dogs barking early in the mornings, that really got on my nerves a bit. Although they are sweet little dogs when not barking loudly! Also beware, there is no facility to heat or cook, but food is pleasant stroll up the beach or a bike ride away up the road. You can also catch a little motorbike 'taxi' back once you have eaten.
The rooms come with free wifi but bear in mind the wifi here is a little unpredictable and is best early morning, not so great afternoons onwards.
The rooms were well looked after, clean, and the lovely Mexican cleaning lady very thorough and friendly.
I do agree that for the price it is a little expensive seeing as there is no cooking facility, but for me, the tranquility and beauty of the place made it value for money in its own way. Thank you Peter and Sandra!
