An enchanting trip back in time!
I stayed for one night in late April in a “deluxe suite” along with my husband and teenage daughter. Our first-floor suite consisted of a large sitting area, off of which were a bathroom, a shower closet, and two spacious bedrooms, each with a double bed. It was definitely a bit of a trek with our luggage from the parking area, down a short touristy street in the “new” town and across the river, but Kasbah Tebi is right at the base of the old village, so we didn’t have to go far once we got across. We later also discovered that they have a donkey available to carry guests’ luggage, something we certainly took advantage of to return our things to our car at the end of our stay.
I’d arranged in advance to have dinner at the kasbah and had been informed during those communications that we could do so at 8:30 to allow us time to first enjoy the sunset from the village. The man who checked us in initially gave me a bit of trouble about this and insisted dinner was at 7:30, but after showing him the messages and doing a bit with google translate, he agreed it would be okay to come to the dining room at the later time. Dinner was quite good – a salad compote starter of some sort (it was very dark and hard to see) and a delicious tagine. The true magic was in the flickering candlelight, with soot marks up the walls hinting at the hundreds of years worth of meals enjoyed in that very place. Breakfast (breads, spreads, eggs, bananas, and orange juice) was also by candlelight, with a bit more visibility as some daylight entered the space to better illuminate the stone details and different charms than those evident at dinner.
The total silence and darkness at night was striking. With walls that were at least a foot thick, nothing reached our room, and it was the most unprecedented sensation. The property does have some electricity available, but we tried to rely almost exclusively on candles (except for in the shower closet, which required use of an overhead light). While this is one of my favorite places I’ve ever stayed and I would therefore highly recommend it to pretty much anyone, my exception would be families with young children, as there are candles in a lot of rather dangerous spots throughout. For example, there was one low candle just outside our door in a tight spot we had to squeeze through to reach the dining room, and my daughter and I had to be extremely careful not to catch our skirts on fire!
The exterior of the kasbah has a variety of seating areas perfect for enjoying the night sky and the sounds of the evening’s final call to prayer echoing through the valley. We also loved wandering through a bit of the village in the dark, as it feels a lot more authentic once all of the vendors have packed up their wares and left the streets looking as they might have a thousand years ago. We returned outside to watch sunrise and to enjoy a quiet morning stroll through the village streets with only a handful of other tourists…and a lot of adorable cats.
Ultimately, this will be a stay that I will forever remember and cherish. We only stayed one night because no rooms were available there for our subsequent time in Ait Ben Haddou, and it was admittedly sad to later be across the river looking longingly towards Kasbah Tebi. It was so much more than a stay, it was an enchanting trip back in time.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for such a beautiful and thoughtful message.
More than simply describing a stay, your words truly capture the spirit of Kasbah Tebi and the experience we try to preserve and share within these ancient walls. It is always deeply moving for us when travelers embrace not only the place itself, but also the silence, simplicity, atmosphere and timeless rhythm of life that make this kasbah so unique.
Reading that your stay became “much more than a stay” is probably one of the most meaningful compliments we could receive. Guests like you remind us why we continue, with great care and love, to keep this family place alive in the spirit of its history.
It was a real pleasure to welcome you and your family, and we sincerely hope our paths will cross again one day in Aït Ben Haddou.
Warm regards,
Mohamed

We go back 400 years
We enjoyed living in another time for an evening with very little electricity and candlelight. We think we're going back 400 years. A room of good dimensions in a very quiet environment.
I can't remember the name of the person who helped us. A man of a certain age a little gruff at first appearances but who turned out to be kind and helpful.
The only downside is the difficulty of getting your luggage from the parking lot to the hotel. On the other hand, at the departure, the luggage is loaded on a donkey and we are taken to the parking lot. Lovely and unique!

Bien cordialement,
Mohamed
