Wonderful staff, amazing quality on dinner and really amazing private onsen on the room. Breakfast was huge and really good and the room was fantastic!

Not really a ryokan, more corporate hotel than an intimate inn. Our room was lovely and outdoor onsen and was nice. The restaurant is quite large and it just wasn’t as intimate as some ryokan we’ve stayed in. The location is good if you’re going to the hot spring “hell” which can get touristy and busy. Go before the crowds come. They’re interesting - especially the top 2 or 3. I’d skip the ones below. Back to the hotel, the food was adequate - not particularly noteworthy. We’ve stayed at some really special places and this was not the finest, but the price reflects that.

We had an exceptional stay at Kannawaen and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable ryokan experience.
The highlight of our stay was the in-room open-air bath, which was both relaxing and beautifully designed. It was perfect for unwinding at any time of day. The public baths were equally impressive, with both indoor and outdoor options that were clean, serene, and thoughtfully maintained and the view from the outdoor public bath was awesome. One of the most unique experiences was the full body steam boxes which we hadn’t encountered anywhere else and thoroughly enjoyed.
Dining was outstanding. One evening we had a kaiseki dinner featuring lobster and shabu shabu, and the next night we experienced a teppanyaki dinner with perfectly prepared steak and abalone. Both meals were delicious, high-quality, and beautifully presented.
We also treated ourselves to head and body massages for an additional fee, and they were absolutely worth it. It was a professional, relaxing, and perfect complement to the overall onsen experience.
The staff were attentive, friendly, and always ready to help, making the entire stay feel seamless and welcoming. The location is very convenient for visiting the Hells of Beppu, which are just a short distance away, and having free self-parking made it especially easy to explore the area by car.
Overall, Kannawaen delivered a perfect blend of relaxation, unique experiences, and exceptional service. We would absolutely stay here again.

We stayed Sora tradition western style, room is spacious, clean, and provides good amenities - like best face soap & moisturizer face creams, top of line hair dryer, Yukata, indoor & out door slippers, toothbrush with paste. I don’t have to pack anything. They provide for you. Only thing missing was body lotion. The indoor hot springs (in room) temperature was perfect, but outside terrace one was extremely hot, so hard to enjoyable. The Japanese style meals, the dinner and breakfast we select was 8/10. All great, but the soup wasn’t my favorite, however others might like it. In my opinion, the coffee wasn’t that great, but good selection of teas. I can’t complain the staff’s service. Top notch, they will make your stay comfortable, everyone so politely kind. So, my staying at here was best experience. Another plus things was next to Hell of Beppu and has great city view.

Not Worth the Price — Worst Complaint Handling Experience

I had high expectations for this ryokan given its reputation and price, but the response to my complaint was extremely disappointing.
Two hours after check-out, I called regarding a piece of jewelry I had left in the room, but the staff repeatedly said, “It’s already been cleaned, so nothing was found,” without even attempting to check or follow up. (I spoke in both Japanese and English.)
At a property that claims to be 4-star level or higher, I would expect at least a courteous confirmation and a follow-up message after checking the room.
What’s even more frustrating is that before my stay, their email responses for restaurant and cake reservations were immediate (within 5 minutes), yet after check-out, I sent three emails about my lost item and never received a single reply.
Of course, I understand that the hotel is not responsible for personal belongings left behind.
However, for a ryokan that charges over 100,000 yen per night, the post-stay service was shockingly poor.
It was my first time experiencing such a stark contrast between pre-stay and post-stay service quality.
Unfortunately, I would not consider staying here again.
