Beautiful peaceful stay
Our stay started out a little rough, after a long travel day, to find we didn't get the cottage we had requested.
The cottage we wanted is on a little pond with a hammock and a shaded platform near the water, a paddle boat and a canoe. The water looked clean and there were fishermen catching fish in nets. I'm sure we were free to use the boats, but it felt like we'd be trespassing on that guest's space.
Our cottage faced an algae covered pond, with still water; likely an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos. However, it was beautiful and they did add a hammock for us, which was lovely. Lots of nice, comfortable outdoor seating and we spent hours out there happily watching birds and the boats going by.
The room was good. Comfortable bed, excellent AC and ceiling fan, lots of lights. Windows on all four sides let in lots of light, would be awesome for airflow, but we were cautioned to keep everything shut all the time because of mosquitoes. They graciously gave us additional towels and pillows. Soap is provided. We should've asked for a top sheet since there was only an acrylic blanket but forgot. Wi-fi is excellent.
My only real complaint was the bathroom, which smelled quite bad, sulfurous, wasn't particularly clean, and had, essentially, zero water pressure (not enough to get the handheld to work and the rainshower head must be just for show). We got used to and ended up rather enjoying the bucket shower, but the water itself smells bad and that was rough. I doubt there's anything they can do about that or the pressure.
The food was amazing thanks to Yashoda; every meal unique and delicious! We paid 4,500 for 3 dinners and 2 snacks for 2 people.
Lots of mosquitoes in the evening so bring hardcore repellent.
Do not miss the early morning boat ride with Shanmu on the river! 2,500 INR. A lovely, peaceful journey during which we saw so many birds, jellyfish, foxes, mussel harvesting and we stopped near two friendly old women in front of a fire and had coffee from a thermos. Delightful. On the way back we visited the local fishmarket and got to see spirited bidding!
Another evening, Vinod spent a good deal of time on the phone trying to locate and finally found a Theyyam ritual at a temple about 20 minutes away (1,000 INR for petrol). He was kind enough to bring us to meet some of his relatives and then to the ceremony. That was an extraordinary experience!
It would be awesome to have a couple of bicycles to loan.
All in all a good stay. I'm aware that I would probably give 5 stars if everything cost less, but higher charges come with higher expectations. And, this being our third time visiting India, I'm well aware and flexible about differing standards around cleanliness, but the family house where we went for meals was pristine and immaculate. They could put a little of that attention into the cottage bathroom.

True Kerala backwater welcome and experience.
The room is lovely - looking out onto a small lake with plenty of bird life to watch while you sit on the veranda.
Vinod and his team are extremely welcoming and attentive - and serving absolutely amazing 1st class Keralan cuisine in their family home with the ingredients bought fresh from the doorstep. The fish and seafood dishes are amazing!
Vinod organised us a small backwater boat trip where we visited the fish market and saw real life palm leaf fishing in progress - not being put on for tourists. Amazing to see.
All round a great destination for those who want to see real Kerala life on a backwater.

Awesome, Authentic kerala experience
The photos do not do justice to the beauty of the place. Its awesome beyond words. It is in a small friendly fishing village about 9 Km from Nileshwar railway station. The property is clean, well maintained and very picturesque. A river flows on one side, beach at hardly 300mt on other side, pond in front of cottage and around 1 km from estuary. We went in rainy season with intermittent rains and the whole place had a different charm, lush with different birds & fish(and a mongoose).
Mr.Vinod and his family were fantastic hosts and took care of all our personal choices and needs. He arranged everything for an early check in and helped us with the transport for sightseeing. The food was amazing, some of the best Kerala food we have had ever. Would definitely recommend this experience for everyone.

The real Kerala experience with great hosts
The property is immersed in a community who lives in nice villas surrounded by a lush forest of coconut trees. The area is a long stretch of land between the river and the sea populated by peasants and fishermen. In few minutes, you switch from lush rice fields, to the long sandy beach. You can enjoy a boat-ride in serene backwaters or visit mosques and small hindu temples.
The individual bungalows are quite comfortable while not being luxurious (A/C, frifge, good, indiviual terrasse). Mine was in right front of the pond surrounded by coconut trees where local birds nestled.
Vinod is a great host who arranged airport pick-ups from Kannur through his brother (2.5 hours drive). He always asked me about my preferred meal time and desired menu. The meals are taken in the dining-room of their modern property next to the bungalows. The wife cooked delicious seafood from the nearby fishermen's pier. I enjoyed king prawns and fishes cooked in a delicious masala mix. For breakfast, you can get local Indian breakfast, fresh fruit (ananas, watermelon) or eggs with delicious homemade masala chai.
What sets the River Lap Homestay apart is the hosts. Vinod and the team are very nice and can arrange several experiences. I recommend asking for a sunrise boat ride in the backwaters (ask for the narrow river beyond Maddakara bridge). They have a motorised long-tail boat and the wife prepared a thermos of masala chai and bananas for me. We also went by boat to the nearby fishermen's pier to buy the morning catch.
In my view, it is a great alternative to the "touristy" backwaters near Allepey & Kochi where I did not go. It is a more relaxing and authentic way to discover Kerala if you like nature.
