Great Hostel ( not so great Wifi ;-) in Room)
I stayed this place on the Christmas eve .... So the reader can imagine how the atmosphere must be .... its was like home away if you are in Recife .. Joe is working there from USA and he was so helpful since i was planning the trip ...... right from providing the moral support to survive in Brazil alone till whatever help one can do he did .... I can write in length but in short the experience -
1. Very friendly place and staff
2. Beautiful complex of hotel with kitchen and pool and garden and all nice
3. Its quiet accessible and close to bus stop but in a small lane ... close to BigBen pharmacy .. but the problem is there are many Big Ban in that area , so it can be confusing ... make sure you have the exact co-ordinate because the published address of the hostel Rua Aviador Severiano Lins no body knows .... finding it can be difficult though location is good
4. Wi-Fi not in room only in reception and in the common area.
5. Joe who is working there,during my stay is only English speaking person , other may not understand , but since he is from US , so they have English speaking staff
6. Bathroom / Rooms / Kitchen all good and clean

Great Breakfast but that was it.
As mentioned in my title the breakfast was great.
We came to the hostel because there was nothing else available for Carnaval. When we arrived we quickly realised a divide between staff and the guests. The staff live there like it’s their home and the guests are an inconvenience to them. We felt very unwelcome there and even on the day we checked out got asked several times about when we were leaving the hostel. Finally at 3pm we were prompted again to leave and this gave us this awful feeling that I should warn all other travellers about.
Do not stay here, there is a reason there hasn’t been a review for 3 years.

Great hostel
location is good, just a few blocks from the beach, the hostel has a swimming pool, common room, kitchen/ wifi did not work on the 2d floor / the staff was very friendly and helpful but did not speak any English/ Is an excellent choice for the price.

Needs a toilet inspection and cleanup
I wanted to stay more at this place but the stench coming from the toilets was horrible so could only resist to stay one night. This was in the shared male big room, don't know about the other rooms. The toilets also were less than basic and dirty. I do not know how a place like this can be allowed to exist without proper clean facilities. Please fix this if you want guests to come.

It has potential ...
A group of friends and I stayed at Hostel Boa Viagem for 3 days during the World Cup. It was an affordable (and super clean) option during the World Cup, but we had a few hiccups during the stay.
If you're traveling from the airport, take the 042 Airport bus directly outside of the A4 exit (wait in the area in the middle of the street). It'll take 20-30 minutes - tell the bus driver you need to get off near College Boa Viagem. The other option is to take a cab, which will be around R$17.
The booking process was straightforward (50% deposit had to be paid upfront during the World Cup), but the check-in was not managed well. It took over an hour to sort out the final price (which was agreed to in email 3 months prior), rooms (female/male are in separate dorms), etc. Do not waste your time with the one staff member that speaks English (but all the others are warm and helpful).
The rooms are basic, but they have large lockers and clean bathrooms. If you end up in the top bunk without a ladder, you can borrow a ladder from another room/bed. You'll need to turn the A/C on/off when needed in the rooms that have it.
The outdoor space is nice to hang out and meet other travelers. There's a small communal kitchen if you'd like to cook (Carrefour is a 10 minute walk). And, there's a small pool with a area for soaking up the sun.
They serve breakfast from 7-9:30a - ham/cheese sandwiches, fruit, bread, tapioca, fresh juice, etc. It's really tasty.
The best part about the location is it's a 5-10 minute walk from Boa Viagem beach. It's a beautiful, clean beach with a great running path. You can only swim during low tide, unless you want to play with sharks. You can get there by turning left out of the hostel, left at the next corner (Mexican restaurant is on the opposite corner), and then taking that street straight to the beach.
The staff didn't share any recommendations, maps, etc, so check with other travelers, locals, LP for things to do. If you have time, be sure to check out Olinda (full day -or- maybe you'll want to stay at a hostel there) and Recife Antigo (half day). They're both 30-40mins by bus, which you can catch 3 blocks from the hostel. Just walk towards the beach to the second big, one-way avenue (heading north). Bus 910 goes to Olinda and 032 - Setubaol/Conde da Boa Vista goes to Recife Antigo. For both, you'll get off at the first stop once you hit that area. You can take the same buses back (there's an HSBC bank on the corner where you get off for the hostel).
