Looks better than it sounds
Let’s start with parking. It is practically non-existent. For a hotel in Hammerfest, I find that quite disappointing, and it gave the stay an unnecessarily frustrating start.
At reception, I was greeted by a receptionist who came across as somewhat passive-aggressive and not particularly interested in checking me in. I was left with the impression that she had more important things to do and that I was almost getting in her way. Not exactly the feeling you want when arriving at a hotel.
As mentioned, the hotel and the room look good. Modern, clean and fresh. The soundproofing, however, is a completely different story. While lying in bed, I genuinely thought there was a leak in one of the drain pipes. Nope – it was simply the guest upstairs flushing the toilet. When you can follow your neighbour’s bathroom visits from your bed, it might be time to take another look at the soundproofing.
Breakfast was perfectly OK. Neither particularly good nor particularly bad. What lets it down is the lack of attention to the buffet. I sat there for about an hour, and both the orange juice and apple juice were empty the entire time. Yes, I could obviously have asked someone to refill them, but guests really shouldn’t have to act as quality control for the breakfast buffet. Staff should be keeping an eye on things and refilling items when they run out.
So, Arctic Sea Hotel looks very good in photos and makes a strong first impression. Unfortunately, my experience was that it was considerably more impressive on the surface than it was in practice.
A modern exterior is nice, but it doesn’t make up for poor parking, indifferent service, bad soundproofing and a lack of attention at breakfast.
