SCAM! DO NOT BOOK, HOST WILL KEEP CARD INFO AND STEAL MONEY WEEKS LATER WITH NO CONTACT

Stayed in the no18 apartments, received a text telling me what codes were to get in. Everything was fine and normal enough, bit loud from neighbouring bar/club and its smoking area directly opposite the windows of apartment. Everything was normal until WEEKS later after zero communication either from host or booking platform the host charged my card an extra £100, more than the cost of the actual stay, and definitely far more than the stay was worth. When I called and text to ask host why and what was going on he initially couldn’t give me an answer (despite being the only person running the business, his mother is also listed in the LLC registration but is close to 100 years old so I really doubt she’d be the one managing cleaning a top floor apartment that was up a lot of very small and uneven steps. The booking platform initially agreed a refund and then after being unable to give a reason the owner accused us of smoking and taking drugs in the apartment, we are an interracial couple (white female with tattoos and alternative appearance and a black male, both in mid-late 20’s). I honestly believe the host had made these unfounded allegations due to our appearance as neither of us smoke or take drugs, one of us is a youth offending team probation officer and the other is a social worker. The host is now trying to charge £137.50 as he’s saying weeks later that the apartment smelt of smoke (the window in lounge was left open and is directly next to a smoking area), someone supposedly smelling something is completely subjective and not at all proof of any wrongdoing. The fact that host Simon is keeping card details (that I assumed were safe as had booked through booking.com) weeks down the line and charging people without any warning or explanation or opportunity to dispute is very worrying and not normal practice as far as I’m aware.

Some good points, but some problems

We liked the central location. The apartment was well equipped, especially the kitchen area which had the full range of utensils and appliances. Located in a courtyard, it was also quiet. There is a self check-in system via codes provided before arrival.
The apartments are arranged over three floors and we were unlucky to have to climb two flights of stairs to reach our apartment. There were no instructions provided as to how to control the heating system, so most of the time, we had little or no heat from the radiators in the kitchen / diner or the bedroom, but the bathroom radiator was always very, very hot!
Parking in the courtyard proved difficult, because there was no barrier or notices to prevent locals from occupying the limited spaces there, instead of in the pay car park opposite. So, even if you have paid extra to book a parking space, you may still have to use one of the nearby pay car parks.

Do not book these apartments!!

There are multiple apartments at No18. On booking they do not tell you which apartment you have booked. The phone number and code they give you for arrival do not work. There is no way of knowing and no communication as to how to get into the apartment. There is no one around at the apartments to help - and as said the phone number does not work. I booked through last minute.com and even they didn't know which apartment they had sold me or how to get in. I had to book a hotel room in Exeter at great expense. Do not book here until they have resolved these arrangements.
