Just perfect

Casita Rio Indio is simply a paradise on earth! For our fourth stay, we were once again amazed by the beauty of the place and the ever warm welcome. The perfect harmony between nature and comfort makes every moment an unforgettable experience. The house is impeccably maintained, surrounded by lush vegetation and rocked by the sweet song of the river. Sebastian, Annick and Pascal are exceptional hosts, always available, caring and passionate, making each visit even more enjoyable. Every stay here is an enchanted break, where you disconnect from everyday life to reconnect to the essentials

Hike in the jungle like Indiana Jones

We booked a 2-3 hours hike with Pascal in his back-yard. He is very knowledgeable about trees, birds, snakes, frogs, apes etc. The hike starts at his lodge up the small stream into the hills, sometimes quite steep up. He explains the jungle life very vividly. I can strongly recommend it.8

Basic but great!

It is basically in the middle of the jungle but close to the main road. The room is very comfortable, the employees very useful and wiling to help. Very clean, no restaurant, hot water, no a/c, tv or wifi. Perfect if you want to get in contact with the nature with facilities.

Friendly but low quality for the price

The expats running the Cabañas are indeed friendly, even though they try to sell you some jungle excursions every day.
At a price of 50$ for a room, one would expect a quality far superior than what is given.
Mattresses are outdated. Double bed is very small. Towels are tiny. And the location of the hammock is right at the entrance of the room making it an either / or between getting in and out of the room or using the hammock.
An update of the bedding is a priority if they want to keep that level of price. Otherwise it’s a 25$ room at most. (That’s what I’ve paid for similar lodging that included fountain water and coffee, with A/C here in panama).

A highlight of Central America

We stumbled across Casita Rio Indio by mistake when looking for hostels in the area and are so lucky that we did! This became one of our favourite places in the whole of Central America.
Casita Rio Indio is ran by three fantastic french hosts and consists of 4 cabanas right next to the jungle. It was easy to access via public transport - we took 2 different buses from panama city which took about 3 hours. The location is stunning - a river runs through the land and the jungle is on your doorstep, with howler monkeys, hummingbirds and toucans all around. My boyfriend, a friend and I stayed in the two "old" cabanas, which were basic but comfortable and clean and consisted of a bed with mosquito net, fan, detached bathroom and a basic outside kitchen. There are also more expensive cabanas which are bigger and more bug proof, but we thought ours were perfect.
We stayed 3 nights and did the jungle tour and night cayman tour with Pascal and Sebastian, which were both fantastic experiences! We saw lots of wildlife and Pascal and Sebastian were fantastic, knowledgeable guides. My partner also did a fishing trip with Pascal and caught us lots of delicious fish to eat one evening. The rest of the time we spent relaxing to the sound of the jungle in the hammocks, though Portobello is only a bus ride away.
There is only a very basic shop nearby so I strongly advise to take any food you might want with you. Alternatively you can pay about $4 and $12 for delicious breakfast and dinner.
Unbelievably beautiful location and fab hosts! A must-do in Panama.
