Varangerkokken is fantastic chef

Great food. Varangerkokken is amazing. His reindeer steak and his cod soup is fantastic. Good rooms. A bit pricey. Alot of seagulls making noice and some noice from docks sometimes so if you are a light sleeper I recommend earbuds

Disappointing breakfast and poor hygiene

We stayed in another hotel, but went here to have breakfast. The first day (Sunday) was quite straightforward. The bread went empty, but they picked up more when we told. The hot food (eager, bacon and beans) was completely cold, and the bacon was almost raw. If you fill your stomach with bread and the delicious pastries, it's fine.
Monday was a big disappointment. The rough bread became empty, and when we asked for more, we were first informed that it was empty. It is incredibly strange that a hotel breakfast does not have bread that customers can choose from. Shortly thereafter, an employee came out, lifted a towel and took bread out of a basket with only his hands without gloves. Hello, hygiene? I never saw him wearing gloves during our entire stay there. When I asked why he took on the food with his hands, I got no answer.
I asked in the reception. Regarding the rough bread they said it would soon be in place. The answer to the hygiene deviation was that “his hands are clean.” CLEAN HANDS! You have to wonder if there is even a food inspection here.
The employees were not able to keep up with filling anything. People had to go to them for the slightest thing to ask, and that was only when they actually came up with something. In addition, the own container with hot water went to tea empty. Nobody followed, and we were only told to pick up water from the coffee machine instead. When the bread went empty again, no one cared. After another trip to the reception we were informed that it would take 10 minutes.
Dear Hotel: If you do not have the capacity, you must stop selling breakfast to external guests. This is not a good service. We have never experienced a similar in other hotels before. If you are not staying at this hotel, you should definitely find another place to eat breakfast. It's not worth 200 at all.

A very disappointing experience

This is one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed at. There are so much to say, i'll write a list. There is a restaurant at the hotel called Varangerkokken, i will also write about this in this review.
The positives first:
-The cleanliness of our room was ok.
-The breakfast on the first of two days was decent. It had everything you'd look for at a basic hotel breakfast, such as different breads, bacon, scrambled and boiled eggs (no fried eggs though?), sausages, butter, some fruit, some basic vegetables, some jam and some other toppings such as salami and cheese. 4 types of drinks, yoghurt and cereal also. You could make your own waffles also, and there was coffee and a coffee machine, which was nice. It was nothing special, but it was as you would expect from a small hotel in a small remote village.
-The staff at the counter was friendly and welcoming when we arrived, and the lovely lady gave us tips on where to eat and what to explore in town. She gave us maps and helped us to find out where to park. Such a shame we didn't see her again on our stay, she really knew customer service and how to make guests feel welcome.
-The food at the restaurant in the evening was decent. A bit cold, but decent tasting.
Unfortunately this was it for the positives. The list of negatives is regretfully much, much longer. Lets go:
-Our room was nothing like the pictures at their booking site. It was old and shabby, and the interior had clearly not been upgraded in a while. First thing we saw when we entered was a lamp with a lampshade that was almost falling off. Next was the view, which was fairly shabby: a brown wooden stick of some kind right outside our window. Our room was clearly in the area of the hotel that had not been taken much care of: it was down two stairs and in the basement with windows on the ground floor. One would expect it to be fairly quiet down there, it was not.
-You could hear people in the other rooms and on the floors above flushing down and using the bathroom. Not a quiet hotel for sure.
-It was not possible to lock the windows in a locked position to get some air, so it was either fully open or fully closed. So it was not possible to air out the room while we were not in it or if we were sleeping, that was a safety risk we did not want to take.
-The inventory was also very well used and shabby. We got a towel with barely any fabric left (safe to say we used this to stand on in the bathroom...), the pillow in the bed was so flat and well used it almost didn't have anything on the inside left, just clumps of fabric. I asked if i could please get an other pillow (sometime in the morning the second day, because i did not sleep well with this "pillow"), and got told to come back and ask after 12:00 because there was none in storage and they wouldn't know if there is any left before after the cleaners was done cleaning. I asked again at 15:00, and got told the same thing. Finally, someone came to our room around 15:45 with an extra pillow for me. I can completely understand that they don't have a huge stack of extra pillows in the storage, but this was ridiculous. On some of the pictures there was beds with two pillows, we did not get that. The bed was also very hard.
-There was no heat in the bathroom. It was cold, and nothing ever dries when there is no heat. I could not take a shower two nights in a row because my towels from the day before was not dry.
-The shower was very small and had no place to put my own soaps and shampoo/conditioner. It had to go on the floor, which is no problem really, only the shower was so small i could not bend down without opening the doors with my backside. So if you are a bigger person like us, this might not be for you.
-The curtains was not great for blocking out the light. I don't understand how they don't have light blocking curtains/ blinders in a hotel above the arctic cirkle, with the midnight sun shining at night, and even if it's not shining it is still light outside during the evening, night, and early morning. This of course gave me trouble sleeping because it was so very light in our room, and i also woke up super early. Very annoying, and very unnescessary.
-No bedside lights for reading, only two very intense light rods just above my head in the bed.
-The breakfast the second day was a joke. They where out of everything. No milk or orange juice, no vegetables like cucumber and tomatoes, no fruit like the day before, hardly any warm food (the bacon was undercooked...), no one was cleaning the tables, it was a hot mess! I heard people complaining because no one cleaned the tables, so there was no places to sit. There was also a very loud group of boys talking very loudly, acting like they were at a party, which added to the frustration of having your morning completely ruined. This was of course not the hotels fault, but i wished they had a "quiet zone" in the breakfast hall, seeing as there was much more space that they just didn't open up.
-The price we paid did not match what we got at all. If they called it a motel and cut the price in half, i would expect what we got and maybe not have been so disappointed and annoyed.
And this was the most important things i had to say about the hotel. In conclusion there was so many things wrong here, the devil is in the details, and the over all execution of it all was a disaster. Now, on to the restaurant Varangerkokken.
We had made reservation, table for two, and was super excited because we had read in the newspaper that this restaurant was worth a visit and had gotten excellent reviews of the food and of the service. The restaurant alone should be worth a visit to Vardø, they said.
We got very disappointed from the second we entered. The best area of the restaurant, the one with the white tablecloths on and the cutlery and wine glasses already decked on, was closed, so our table was basically in the same breakfast hall. No one was there to greet us and we had to wait in line even when we had reservations. So whats the point of reservations then?
We got our table, and the first thing we saw was that it had clearly not been cleaned for a while. We made a quick check, and got our suspicions confirmed (see photos).
The waitress, very shy, brought us menus and water, and to my big surprise there was no starters on the menu. I had expected to be able to enjoy a three-course dinner here, like they had talked about in the newspaper. I was expecting to try their fish soup, but it was no where on the menu. I asked about it, and the waitress said they didn't have it but she could ask if the chef could make it for me. I loved the sentiment and appreciated the friendliness, but it made me think two things: if this is a homemade fish soup, you can't just make it in minutes, and if it's not homemade i really didn't want it. And if it's homemade i would have to wait a long time, and i was already getting hangry because we had waited pretty long time already. So i declined and ordered the entrecôte for my main course.
I asked if they had a drink menu, they did not. Only a menu of the wines. So we got the best wine there, and waited for our food. And waited. And waited. We had reservation at 6pm, and we got our food about 7pm. This should tell you something about how slow everything was.
When the food arrived, the meat was a bit cold, but i was so hungry now that i just ate it anyway. The pepper sauce was divine! However...when i order meat like this, i expect to receive a steak knife. No one brought it when we ordered, not when the food arrived, not even after we had started eating. No i had to get up and go ask for it myself. To me this is such an elementary, basic, service to do when someone orders steak or entrecôte, it was ridiculous. I overheard someone else complaining about getting their meat almost raw when they had asked for it well done- and then i remembered no one even asked us about that when we ordered...
The portions was fairly small (see photo), not worth the price, so we ordered desserts to just because we had room for more. I had the brownie with ice which was good! And my partner had the panna cotta, which was also good, but served to him in a jar... Not on a plate with maybe some fruits or berries on the side, nope just in a tiny tiny jar (see photo). I feel like the execution of everything this evening was so very half-assed, nothing was perfect, nothing was done right, and we felt like we had a completely opposite experience from the journalist in the news paper. Not one thing was as they had described it, not the food and not the service. Something was lacking, and there was no attention to details whatsoever.
We were completely disappointed, finished our wine, paid a hefty check, and went to bed early, ready to get away from this hotel as soon as possible. Then happened the morning and breakfast described earlier, so you can only imagine how happy we were when we checked out in the morning.
In conclusion, there is much to be desired after staying here, we will not be back and it doesn't matter because nothing will change- this is the only "hotel/motel" in the village, so there is no reason to change seeing as people will have to stay here anyway.

Beautiful stay

Centrally located, near the port. Friendly and uncomplicated staff. Nice room with good beds.
The hotel has a restaurant with a small menu selection but very good food.
The stay with two nights we enjoyed very much.

Best hotel at the top of Norway

Cozy, small hotel. Great view of the harbor from our hotel room. Pleasant and helpful staff. Good breakfast included in the price. Very good restaurant if you want to buy dinner. Outside there is good parking close to the entrance. For such a small place, it is great that there is a hotel with good facilities.
