Avoid this hostel: Bed bugs, misrepresented tours, and management that ghosts you
I have stayed in 60+ hostels across 40 countries, and my experience at Mayan Monkey in Cancun is by far the worst I’ve ever had, made even worse by the complete lack of professionalism from their management team.
During my stay, the hostel had absolutely no atmosphere—there were no events or efforts to create a social environment. Even worse, I was bitten by bed bugs. I also booked a boat tour through the hostel for $90, which was falsely advertised as a "young, social" tour. I was the only young person there, and I later found out other participants only paid $50–60 for the exact same tour with all fees included. When I reached out via WhatsApp to address this, I was completely ignored.
After leaving a negative review detailing these issues, I received a generic, dismissive public reply. However, shortly after, I was contacted directly via email by Mr. Mata who apologized for the experience, explicitly offered a refund for the portion of the stay paid directly to them, and asked for my banking information to process it, stating it would take 7 to 14 business days.
I provided the requested information, and they confirmed receipt, assuring me the refund was "in process." That was over four months ago. Since then, the Mayan Monkey team have completely ghosted me. Despite my repeated follow-ups over the last four months, they have refused to answer a single email or follow through on their written promise.
Mistakes and bad experiences happen in hospitality, but lying to your guests, collecting their personal banking information under the guise of a refund, and then ignoring them for months shows a complete lack of integrity.
I strongly advise anyone considering Mayan Monkey to book elsewhere. They do not care about your experience, they overcharge for misrepresented activities, and their management will make empty promises just to save face.

Mayan Monkey 5 Star experience - After a very stressful experience during our honeymoon in Cancun this April, the Mayan Monkey truly restored our faith in hospitality and customer service.
My husband and I had originally booked a 5-star honeymoon resort, but due to an unfortunate misunderstanding involving my beach bag falling from our balcony — with our phones and access to our money inside , The hotel misunderstood the situation ans asked my husband to leave completely unjustified. My husband suddenly found himself alone, without accommodation, and with very little cash. It was an incredibly upsetting situation, especially while abroad.
Thankfully, Mayan Monkey came to the rescue.
My husband had just enough money to book a night there, and from the moment he arrived, the staff treated him with such kindness and understanding. Once we managed to sort out a replacement phone, they even allowed him to do a transfer so he could pay for his stay properly and have some money available for food and drinks. That level of trust and compassion meant the world to us during such a difficult time.
The staff went completely above and beyond. They even allowed me to come in on a day pass so I could spend time with my husband by the pool while we figured everything out. Every single member of staff was amazing, but I have to give a very special mention to Stephania, who was absolutely incredible. She genuinely could not do enough for us and showed more care and professionalism than many luxury hotels ever could.
Honestly, this place could teach some 5-star resorts a lesson in true customer service.
The atmosphere was brilliant — lovely bar area, great pool, comfortable seating areas, and such a friendly vibe throughout. The location is perfect too: just a short stroll to the beach, shops, and nightlife like Coco Bongo, with buses conveniently across the road that take you downtown for only 12 pesos.
What started as a nightmare situation became so much easier thanks to the kindness and humanity shown to us by the team at Mayan Monkey. We will never forget it.
If you’re looking for somewhere affordable, welcoming, fun, and genuinely caring, I honestly could not recommend Mayan Monkey more.

Enjoyed our stay. Staff were super friendly and outgoing. Special shoutout to Miguel and Dave. Only disappointing thing was that the hostel no longer has social events at the hostel itself, and that the social area closes around 11pm
