Unique and great location

We were not disappointed in our stay at this hotel. The room has the authentic tatami mats, the futons, the little outdoor balcony and the super unique and a bit antiquated bathroom. The bathroom has essentially one incoming water source. The water comes into the sink and with a lover, can divert the water to either the sink or the shower. There is also a valve on the sink area to divert water to the toilet. Just unique and kind of different!
Like in a lot of older hotels, the number of electrical outlets is low, so you may need to be creative for where you plug in things to charge.
The futons were very comfortable. They had yukatas to wear as well as the obi sashes.
We went down to the onsen, which is in the basement. When we went, there was no one else down there, so it was really nice having it to ourselves. There is a separate women’s and men’s section, of course. Really comfortable.
The location of this hotel cannot be beat. You are right on the main drag and have a view of the ocean. It was great to watch people and the deer walking around outside.
The area to change your shoes right inside the room is very tight, so we ended up actually tying our shoes outside the door!
The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and was able to store our luggage. They were exceptionally helpful in that I had accidentally left my purse in the lobby after checking out. We had just gotten off the ferry on the Hiroshima side when they notified me I had left my purse. We took the ferry back over and I reclaimed my purse. I was so thankful that they were so helpful!
I would definitely recommend the staying on the island overnight. You have a completely different experience, walking around the town after the mad rush of day tripper has gone home, as well as wandering the empty streets the next morning.

Wonderful from the start

We stayed for one night as a family of four in July - staying in Japanese style room. Everything was great from when we first stepped through the doors well before check in and they had a smooth process to store our luggage for the day, through to when we returned and were quickly checked into our room. Very friendly service, very comfortable futons, efficient air con, peaceful Japanese bath. The location was excellent for us too, near the ferry terminal so not too far to walk with our luggage, just out of the extremely busy main street and walking distance to the tori gate where we watched the sun go down and then come back up again the next morning.

Spacious rooms in a prime location

Excellent location. And above all: when the myriads of day tourists were gone, we had the island to ourselves. Classic Japanese furnishings. Spacious, comfortable rooms. Storing luggage before check-in is no problem at all. Very friendly hosts.
From 5 p.m. on, you have the island almost to yourself...

Appreciate Miyajima without the crowds

We stayed overnight at the Sakuraya which allowed us to appreciate Miyajima in the evening and early morning before the crowds arrived. The hotel is on the water front, 5 minutes from the ferry terminal and 5 minutes in the other direction to the floating torii gate and the ropeway entrance. Room was clean and basic, very small bathroom, but comfortable futon beds. We were not aware, but they do provide breakfast if you pre order the night before. We enjoyed being able to see the torii gate with very few people around and went straight on to the ropeway at 9am with no queues. We then climbed to the summit of Mount Misen with relatively few people around. When we came down, the queue to go up was beyond ridiculous and the small town absolutely rammed with tourists. So pleased to have stayed at the Sakuraya.

Odawara Terminal Hotel

I can’t recommend this place enough. When my useless hotel in Kyoto had issues with shipping my luggage to Okinawa (I was already in Hiroshima when they informed me about this) they were absolutely no help and basically told me “sucks to suck” the amazing staff somehow managed to get my luggage rerouted to the hotel and it was sitting in the lobby waiting for me the next morning. Amazing staff and amazing place. I will be coming back again one day
